Re: Steering column cover

With mine, I had to saw off the brass bush, clean up the column and fit a new bush. ESM don't seem to supply this item, but I found one from Simply Bearings. Perhaps it's worth putting a tiny amount of lubricant into this interface; not so much for lubrication (hardly a high speed/force assembly!), ...

Re: Steering column cover

Mine (early 1956) is the same as geoberni's photo. As I understand it, the black rubber ring (basically anti-vibration?) sits hard in the bracket and firmly grips the brass bush. The bush's inner face is the bearing surface in which the column turns. ie the column should be the only component that t...

Re: Annual Insurance Fun.

I'm still having trouble getting Carole Nash to confirm whether they've withdrawn from insuring Morris Minors. As mentioned upthread, they declined to renew my policy with them, after 10 claim-free years, and no change of circumstances. Two hours on the phone revealed that this was because of my hav...

Re: Horn wiring - 1953 Series II

Good result. Contact via a single strand (possibly intermittent when hit with a high current) would account for the "click" symptom. I'm still puzzled that the slip ring was reported as providing a permanent path to earth. I suspect the OP was actually touching the horn wire to the column,...

Re: Horn wiring - 1953 Series II

I still think the resistance measurements I suggested on Jan 27th will tell us more than an endoscope would.

Re: Electrical issue

Was the original fuse intact? This would give you reassurance that dirt was always the issue, rather than an intermittent downstream problem.

Re: Horn wiring - 1953 Series II

The top bearing on my Series 2 column is rubber. So I too have always assumed that the column's earthiness comes only via the steering rack; lots of metal and well lubricated cogs and drives. I just measured the resistance between the horn switch retaining screw in the side of the hub and a random f...

Re: Horn wiring - 1953 Series II

Hang on a minute. I thought the column slip-ring is the mechanism that carries the switched earth from the pressed horn button towards the horn. So it shouldn't be permanently giving you an earth. If it is, surely it would be permanently sounding the horn via that purple wire. Very confusing. I'm wo...

Re: Horn wiring - 1953 Series II

Are you sure the push button itself is providing a dead short when pressed?
And its peripheral contact to the column's hub is good?

Re: Electrical issue

All those devices are on the single "Ignition" fuse; so it (or its dirty connections/loose wires) look likely suspects. If you've got a multimeter, it would make any further investigations a lot, lot easier. Be careful probing around the fuses and wiring with any metal tool (eg screwdriver...

Re: Annual Insurance Fun.

PS
Just received Adrian Flux's quote. It's around £10,900 pa cheaper than the renewal premium that Carole Nash could procure.

Re: Annual Insurance Fun.

I can beat that. Carole Nash, who I've been with for 12 years, emailed me today to say they can't re-quote for my Jan 24 renewal. So I rang up to find out why. I need to know, as the new insurer will ask that very question. And no answer = no quote = no cover. After two frustrating hours of being bo...

Re: Grease Gun

The Series II manual says to grease the steering nipples every 1000 miles, while the 1000 manuals state 3000 miles/3 months.
But surely the components are identical!
I only just noticed this, having lost a Quiz Night point at MOT23, presumably due to the QuizMaster having a newer can than mine!

Re: Metal parcel shelf

I've replaced the angled steel bar along its leading edge with 12mm by 12mm wood.
My thinking is that this material is weaker than my tibia/fibula, whereas steel is stronger!
The idea of replacing the fibre shelf itself with an aluminium "guillotine" horrifies me.

Re: French Low Emisson Zones

Some websites assert that you need a "carte grise de collection" which, with the disappearance of Morris Motors, requires an attestation from the French FFVA historic car federation. But - after yet more hours on the internet - I discovered that they won't handle applications from outside ...

Re: French Low Emisson Zones

I'd been hoping Mary picks up this thread. Her PM facility via this website seems to be turned off. I think I've managed to send an email to the Amicale, but if any member can contact Mary directly, I (and the MOT23 organisers) would appreciate this. Otherwise, it's a case of avoiding Rouen, and per...

Re: French Low Emisson Zones

I've done some more digging: The website of the Federation of Historic Motor Vehicles has led me to the actual Rouen legislation. But (understandably!) it's in French, and Google Translate doesn't work well on Legaleese. There may be forms to fill in, and we (MOT23) are a bit pushed for time. So is ...

Re: French Low Emisson Zones

Just to clarify, I'm not trying to get an exemption from paying some sort of registration fee. I'm trying to get an exemption from the exhaust grading system, none of whose levels our Minors obviously comply with. Otherwise I have indeed got to work out which cities to avoid, in order their ANPR doe...
