Re: FRONT SCREEN PROBLEMS

Just done one and had the biggest fight getting it in than any I have done in the past. Rubber on glass then nylon strimmer line to pull the lip in. Resorted to rubber hammer to get it in. Could not fit the chrome so put in a piece of 5A three core mains lead and left it over night. Then the chrome ...

Re: Road trip - what spares?

Plus at least one known good ignition coil and a set of hoses, especially a bendable bypass hose.

Re: Exported Minor

In the 70s and still today, new cars are imported to the channel islands for use in the summer hire fleets then sent on to the UK. This was not a common practice back in the early sixties though.

Re: Weird gadget thing

OK this is a guess but I suspect this is a transistor acting as a switch. The transistor is bypassed until you press the button on starting when the points turn the transistor on / off and the transistor drives the coil. This is exactly like many budget "electronic" ignition units. Clever ...

Re: Put on your thinking caps

If you remove the ammeter remember it is intercepting the power feed to the car so the original connection has to be remade. For you technical people out there, If you think back, ammeters diappeared when alternators came in in the late sixties. On commercial installations there is usually a voltage...

Re: Put on your thinking caps

I suspect your alternator is feeding power directly to the battery and not through the ammeter. The meter is only showing current going to the cars systems. To put that another way, is the big wire from the alternator going directly to the battery (as it should)? Ammeters are not good in alternator ...

Re: Cavity inspection tools

I bought one with a small built in screen from Maplin. Its a very useful tool but the images are not good enough for a serious assessment of how bad rot is in a cavity. Great for spotting filler and pu foam bodges without major dismantelling. Also retrieving lost nuts in doors etc. I wonder if the t...

Re: sri lanka repair panels

The thing that bothers me most about repair panels is the thickness. Some bought from a well known source but of unknown manufacture were significantly thinner than the originals. You can't tell when you buy by phone. On the plus side it saves on carriage. Solution as previously suggested is make yo...

Its the start up surge which can cause problems. I suggest you get the shop to prove it will run on a 13A plug with 13A fuse fitted before you take it home.

Galvafroid zinc paint can be left uncoated but is not easy to get flat enough under cellulose etc. Ideal for unseen places.

Re: Door alignment

Where the door hinges bolt to the hinge pillar the bolts are in slots. Loosen the bolts and the door will move about a LOT. Get the B post fit right then finally adjust the wing to match up. Check for rust in the hinge pillar / flitch panel as it causes a lot of problems with door fit too.

Re: trav timber

There was an attempt by BMC to use fibreglass which was mentioned in a magazine article in the last few months but I cannot recall where. The problem these days would be convincing MOT/insurers that the alternative was as strong since the timber is deemed "structural". There is a half way ...

Re: Design of saloon Rear window to boot panel

As far as I can tell the boot surround panel is spot welded to the back edge of the parcel shelf but is pressed to form a ledge onto which the roof panel sits. The bulbous bit is part of the roof and ends in a 90 deg bend under which is spot welded down. The convertible hood wooden rail bolts to the...

So far Rotarista red lead covered by black gloss has lasted 25 years. Sadly real red lead is now banned unless you can turn some up at a boot sale. Modern red oxide is just brown undercoat. Recently (5 years back) I used jenolite then galvafroid zinc paint then QD90 gloss or International Danboline ...
