Re: what causes this?
Hello david, the voltage across the coil does not say very much as the electronic ignition module is in circuit. What is important is the voltage from the coil +ve terminal to earth. However assuming the supply to the coil is healthy, I suspect the electronic module. Have you any points and a conden...

Re: what causes this?
Hello David, as it is electronic ignition I'm assuming your car is negative earth; with the ignition on you should read about 12v on the +ve terminal of the coil with the ignition on, if not then there is something wrong with the feed from the ignition switch. If you have 12 v, remove the king lead ...

Re: what causes this?
Hello Bob,
although I've never measured it, I'm surprised at the figure of 5 ohms as the secondary winding has a huge number of turns compared to the primary and of a very fine conductor, I would've expected much higher?

Hello Lowride Stepside,
not obsessed, but it's been an interest for a long time; being as this is a car forum I thought that the car connection would interest?
There is also a lot of misconception about beers and drink in general.

Re: Favourite Beers
Hello Lowride Stepside, do you know that Old Speckled Hen has a car association? It used to be brewed by Moralnd (taken over by Greene King), an Abingdon brewery . It was actually named after a car that belonged to the MG works which was nicknamed 'Owd speckled un' because of paint splashes. The bee...

Hello Dave,
that is a personal choice (and many do so chose I know), but no drink with flavour benefits from being served so cold, beer, wine, spirits or even tea?

Hello Dave,
I have to correct you, English beer is not served at room temperature, it is stored and served at approximately 12 degrees Centigrade which is quite cooler than our rooms. Only Keg is served at infeasibly cold temperatures but neither are served warm.

Hello Lowride Stepside,
"None of which are crisp or refreshing ",
which would indicate that you haven't tried very many if any, because that is simply totally false?

Re: Favourite Beers
Hello Lowride stepside, lager is different to IPA or any other pale ale for that matter. Lager (which means store) was brewed quite cold and then stored for some time, it uses a bottom fermenting yeast as opposed to our beers which use a top fermenting yeast. IPA was brewed quite strong and was very...

Hello Lambrettalad,
"I have to come clean ,I hate real ale, with a vengeance"
that is a very sweeping statement as there is a vast number of different tasting 'Real ales', a huge variety even more than there is of wines.

Re: The EURO
Hello Marky, The sooner we get free of the European Union the better it will be. We can then make our own minds up as to what legislation we want. It's a bottomless money pit and a bureaucratic nightmare. Our politicians say we need to be in the club to influence it, there is, however, little eviden...

Re: Favourite Beers
Hello all, we are fortunate in the U.K. that we have a great variety of live beer readily available to us, generally called 'Real Ale'. Very few other countries sell it in any quantity. Strangely, the couple of times I've been to Dublin where real ale is brewed and sold they often serve it using CO2...

Re: Dynamo question.
Hello W.P., from what you say your dynamo is charging, if it maintains 15v with lights and wipers on that's good. You don't need to worry about it dropping off when the car's idling, the battery will supply the load for that short while and quickly get recharged once you start driving again. Yes lea...

Re: Anyone used these tyres on their Minor?
Hello Daveyl, it is the large difference in size that is the limiting factor, requiring a speed limit of 50mph for their use. Steering and braking will be seriously compromised in the case of evasive action being required with a space saver fitted. I am very surprised that they were certified for us...

Hello Keith, "Before fitting the new bearing, I put it in the freezer for a few hours. Then used a blow torch to heat the end of the crank, while its hot I got the bearing from the freezer" That seems rather over the top for a spigot bearing, or do Fiat makes their's with an interference f...

Hello David, simply go to Burlen (Link in an earlier post) to get the correct item, you'll need a new cover anyway. It is to extend the life of the points (some versions use a diode instead, but that makes them polarity conscious) rather than radio interference suppression. A point about mechanical ...

Re: Millions of classics could be banned from roads
Hello all, politicians! It was Mr Milliband who signed this country's agreement to reduce emissions, not only by the amount the EU wanted but by a larger amount, despite not having a clue how it can be achieved or even if it is technically possible. But recently he has been on his soap box about ene...

Re: Fly cuter tool?
Hello Richard, theoretically what you say is true about machining in a lathe, but in practice, with cast iron it will not be a problem. And as today most use carbide tipped tools the surface hardness will not be noticed. Certainly it is not the most accurate way, a milling machine or surface grinder...

Re: Those dirty electric cars! Pah!
Hello Dominic, nothing is as simple or easy as it seems. However it seems that while the government is actively encouraging electric vehicles on the one hand, there is another aspect which is that we are facing a serious shortfall of generating capacity in the very near future, (which these silly wi...
