Re: Warning light when main lights are on

Thanks for all the hints everyone. I'm going to be with the car later in the month and will investigate further then. From memory, the ignition has the correct bulb attached an comes on as usual before starting the engine. Also from memory, the car has an alternator. Will post an update when I'm abl...

Warning light when main lights are on

Long time no post - embarrassed to say my minor has been off the road for a year needing welding to rear spring hangar. Any way... My mum's minor has a problem I'm struggling to puzzle out; electrics are generally a mystery to me. The problem is that the ignition warning light comes on when you put ...

Re: Knocking. Leaking exhaust?

Ah, I'd always assumed it was the other way around, although what you say makes sense. I'll use the steep hill method to set it right, but will also use a test bulb to see what the end figure is, just for interest. From memory its about 7degrees advanced at the moment going by the notch on the crank...

Re: Knocking. Leaking exhaust?

It's pinking slightly (jangling noise) and the roaring noise occurs when accelerating hard, so I figure it's when the vacuum advance is at maximum. I'll run a few test drives up a steep hill and find the best position from that.

Re: Knocking. Leaking exhaust?

Spent the day today putting the engine back together after KAR in Barnstaple were able to supply me with the ring I needed. The compression is now equal across all cylinders and the car is much improved, although I can now hear and feel that the timing is slightly out - it's too far advanced and is ...

Re: Knocking. Leaking exhaust?

Removed the head today and pulled the piston and valves. Two of the exhaust valves were in quite a bad way and I'll be replacing the whole set. On pulling the offending piston I found that the top ring was broken in two. Luckily the bore was undamaged and still like new. So, the question (which I'll...

Re: Knocking. Leaking exhaust?

Just back in from doing a compression test. With the engine hot and the throttle open, three pistons pushed 170 dry, the fourth only managed 115. I followed this up with a wet test on the bad pot, which raised the result to 140. Didn't bother doing wet tests on the others. So this suggests I do have...

Re: Knocking. Leaking exhaust?

It just goes to the air filter at the moment, but I have an hs4 in the shed which might need to see action. Tried tapping the spacer block On the old, ailing engine which worked but gave a rough idle.

Re: Knocking. Leaking exhaust?

Thanks Roy, that's exactly what I was planning on doing.

It's not burning any oil that I know of - no white smoke, so hopefully the new guides will do the trick.

I'll post back once this is done in the next week or so.

Knocking. Leaking exhaust?

Right. I am running a rebuilt engine which I did myself on a bit of a budget two years ago. Everything in the bottom half was replaced with a reground and rebore. I've covered about 8000 miles since then. When I rebuilt the engine I reused the old valves, which weren't in tip top condition, I'd have...

Re: Distributor drive replacement

I did drop mine when refitting. Luckily I had put a tappet chest cover bolt in the top and had tied a bit of wire around the end so it lifted right out again.

Certainly worth doing as dropping the sump can be a bit time consuming - all those little screws!

Re: Horrendous brake squeal!!

As you've already filed the leading edges I'd take it for a good run with lots and lots of hills (is Staffordshire hilly?) at least 20 miles, and see if it gets any better. The shoes won't have done anything over five miles. It takes at least 100 miles of normal driving in my opinion to bed new shoe...

Great, thanks. I do have a splitter so all fine hopefully. As always looks like an easy job if things come undone as they ought to.

Rear damper link nut size

Had the MOT today and failed on a few things, one of which was a worn rear damper link. Does anyone know the size of the nuts, both the one that holds the link to the damper arm and the one that joins to the body? Other fails were: Rear brake lights flashing when the indicators were on. Sorted this,...

Re: Renewing heater hoses on late 1000

When I did mine I disconnected both hoses at the engine end and blew through them to get almost all of the water out of the matrix. A small amount still got spilt, but hardly any - a rag or two under the clips on the matrix will do the job. There is no need to drain further coolant from the engine a...

Re: Rubber Sump Gasket

Rubber ones are available from Moss Europe. http://www.moss-europe.co.uk/Shop/ViewProducts.aspx?PlateIndexID=1375 item 166. I bought a set of these but didn't end up fitting them as I finally got knack of cutting cork ones to length, which have been fine ever since. I left about 3/16'' (or not quite...

Re: New engine problem

Yep, all exhaust set to 15 thou. With the valve ground all psi readings are 170 ish and no fumes, so can only presume that the burn (which was pretty awful) was getting up the valve guide. Would have the new head on in the next couple of weeks. A little odd I guess, but very glad all the rings were ...
