I'll have to walk, but they'll hopefully be helpful at the very least.
Fortunately its not far an all down hill so I can push it if they think they can help : P

Re: rather slow moggy
ok, i'll try retarding it a bit further.
I know they're likely to empty my pockets, but I'm supposed to be driving it to uni in 2 weeks, so I'm running out of time :/ There is a vintage specialist in my town but I've never used them, so not a clue how good or otherwise they are.

Turning it on the handle has no effect. minor kick back, but no catch :/

Re: rather slow moggy
using a battery tester (admittedly from Aldi) the battery is fine?
fair enough, that now explains the light (thought not why i've not noticed it go off when pulling the starter before, maybe I'm just unobservant...)

Re: rather slow moggy
nope, no joy :/
Just turns over for a bit then goes vrrrrrm, as it did with the fuel pump wired up. plugs still getting wet.
Ignition light turns off after a while but comes back on when I dry them.

Re: rather slow moggy
Well damn (possibly), it always appeared to be petrol due to how quickly the plugs dried. Just dried it with a lighter and they didn't catch at all, so I guessed water getting in. looked in radiator and low and behold well down on where it should be, but turning it by hand without plugs nothing spla...

Re: rather slow moggy
Can do. they are going in air dry anyway and still coming out wet, just not wanted to use a lighter on them as petrol and fire don't tend to mix

Re: rather slow moggy
sorry I haven't updated you all for a bit, but I've been away. I decoked it and it ran fine. ...when I tested drove it. It even got to 70 without my foot being fully down! Problems came next time I came to run it, when it decided not to catch. and then every time after that. Plugs are sparking when ...

I'll give it a shot :S don't have a pillar drill either :/
I'll get a spare one when funds allow, they aren't cheap, and I'm a student ;)
I love word filters...

Re: rather slow moggy
the gasket was worn and layers peeling at 3. But would you advise checking the valves anyway? and do I need to check all of them, or just those at 3? The idea of it sort of scares me, never done it before...
Just looked up how to decoke, seems easy enough. Should be able to manage it

Re: rather slow moggy
got the head off today. Gasket was slightly buckled all round, and the layers had split near #3. Manifold gasket also snapped at the end.
couldn't see any problems with the cylinders or head themselves, so thats a good thing

Re: rather slow moggy
I took those readings straight after a short run, so it was a 'hot' reading (presuming i have terminology right this time :-? ) Its a stick type and was turned it over about half a dozen times each. Did 1,2,3,4,4,3,2,1 pretty much same readings each way. Didn't manage to get the head off today as I ...

Re: rather slow moggy
Ahh, didn't realise that all the spark plugs had to be out, bloody online guides :P As i said, it was probably my fault. Just done another (with all the plugs out this time) and got better, if not great, readings. #1 - 60psi #2 - 60psi #3 - 15psi #4 - 60psi how would I tell if its the valve or the p...

Re: rather slow moggy
yeah, I'm going to try taking its head off tomorrow. I thought it would be too low for it to run, but it does. It is quite possible I messed it up, as I've never done a compression test before. The engine was hot and throttle was fully open so not sure what I could have done wrong. Forgot to say, ch...

Re: rather slow moggy
moggiethouable - thanks, i'll try that tomorrow (I like K.I.S) John - I haven't changed the condensor as I thought that was only if it was stuttering, and it's running fine just slow (currently). (I'm quite happy to be wrong, and probably am) BMC - Sorry if you feel I've ignored your advice. I'm wai...

Re: rather slow moggy
that might be because this is a temporary pump which came with the car (the young members told me was probably from a landy but would work), as the one that came fitted was effectively dead.
