Thermostat is below the sensor, but you are causing me to think that I'll move it above. It will give me temps as the engine is warming up.
Why didn't I think of that?

Re: Temp Gauge and 948cc Engine
Here is the cut off hose thing. I think it looks a lot more tidy.
Temp is reading a bit higher, 70c.[frame][/frame]

Re: Temp Gauge and 948cc Engine
I'm still working out the bugs. I have a hodge podge of old instruments. I suspect a bad or mismatched sender. The reading I get rises only to about 55c. I've since put in a higher (192f) thermostat and ordered a new matching gauge and sender. I've also cut off the hose attachment by about half. Tha...

Re: Temp Gauge and 948cc Engine
I've wanted a temp gauge on my 948 for a long time. I stumbled upon a "sandwich plate" on a classic mini parts site. Cost was about $22 US. It's the perfect answer. I didn't want to put an aluminum adapter in the top hose, because I thought it wouldn't leave enough rubber hose to absorb vi...

Re: rather slow moggy
My dizzy was in that approximate position. It has been wrongly oriented when someone sometime reassembled the engine (not me, honest! some PO.) There are steps in the workshop manual that I followed rather easily to correctly index it. Section AA.28 "To Refit The Distributor Drive Gear." W...

Can someone talk Onion through "Flashing" the Dynamo (generator over here.) It's a quick contact between battery and field coils. might help, can't hurt.

Re: Tips on increasing MPG
I've put electric fans on other cars, and they work well. Are you putting in a thermostat switch? or just an on/off switch?

Re: engine block water ways
I've tried going after it with a dental pic, and I've run a length of old speedometer cable with a drill when I had the head off.
I'm not going to worry any more.

Re: sump gasket
I'm getting ready to go into my sump for the same reason.
Did I read somewhere that the semi circular cork seals have to soak in oil for a day prior to installation, or do they go in dry?
Thanks

Re: engine block water ways
I have a 948 engine with curious water ways. The coolant drain (left side, rear of engine) is blocked. I cleaned out some old sludge, but I'm up against a solid wall about 1/2 inch in. I've tapped it with a small punch and hammer, but am afraid to give it a decisive blow. I bought the car about a ye...

Re: Tips on increasing MPG
I've been told that a gallon on your side of the Atlantic is larger than one on this side.
Is that true? Our gallon is 3.785 liters, and I'm getting about 33 mpg on this side of the pond. If you are using Imperial Gallons, my mpg would be 40. Seems too good to be true.

Re: Dipsticks
My 948 dipstick goes to the bottom of the sump with a clunk. There is no stop up higher where it goes into the case. It has the full mark 1+7/8 inch from the bottom. Does that give me a correct reading?
Thanks

Re: Dumb question (maybe not) about speedo cable
The pinion and guide come out easily. I used channel lock pliers to start it. After about a half turn it should back out by hand. Get a new fiber washer from the hardware store 1 inch ID. There is also a seal in there that you might want to renew. When reassembling I smeared the threads and washer w...

Re: Dumb question (maybe not) about speedo cable
Twist the bottom of the speedo cable by hand, if you see a twitching of the speedometer needle then everything is OK at the speedometer end. It's not too difficult to remove the whole cable and the gearbox attachment and work out the problems on a workbench. I just went through trials and tribulatio...

Re: oil leak
Been there, done that. I've been trying to chase every oil leak since I got my 59 convertible last November. It's been like Captain Ahab chasing the White Whale. All the seals, sump gaskets, head and tappet gaskets, everything I could access without pulling the engine. I'm down to a few pesky drops ...

Re: Dumb question (maybe not) about speedo cable
Nobody has mentioned the inner cable. Be sure it is seated in the speedometer. If not, it would hold off the lower connection by about the amount shown.
