Re: Help what fuel to run?
I would use E5 plus an additive unless you have hardened valve seats. I use Millers VSPe Power Plus which claims to combat the adverse effects of E10 but I err on the safe side. VSPe additive also increases the octane value so the timing may need tweaking accordingly - the higher the octane value th...

Re: Clutch judder
Well I have installed a new lightened flywheel and heavy duty diaphragm clutch cover plus roller release bearing. The judder is now much worse! Kevin's point about engine movement affecting clutch actuation is making more sense as the heavier duty clutch is likely to move the engine more than the ol...

Re: Clutch judder
Not sure this has anything to do with my clutch judder but my mechanical linkage is very different. The linkage cross/relay shaft has been completely removed. The clutch pedal cross shaft has been extended with a drop leg welded on which is directly connected via a cable to the clutch release fork. ...

Re: Clutch judder
.... just had a quick look at the mechanical linkage and it all seems completely non-standard. I have not paid much attention to it in the past but it must have been altered by CW MMC when they put the Toyota 5-speed box in. I will try and take some better photos but the relay shaft is only attached...

Re: Clutch judder
Phil ... here are a couple of photos of my bellhousing & g'box. It may not be enough for you to see properly but it's all I have for the moment until I'm next under the car.A photo or photos of what you have would be appreciated.

Re: Clutch judder
All comments much appreciated. Kevin - I understand now ... I don't think there is a gearbox restraint cable on the Toyota 5-speed box conversion - it sits on a rubber mount mounted to a cross-member. This could be part of the problem. The engine steady bar will not prevent longitudinal movement so ...

Re: Clutch judder
The 1098 modified flywheel was supplied by Charles Ware Morris Minor Centre back in 1998 I think - so it certainly should be concentric with no run-out.
I don't see how the gearbox could be misaligned unless the bellhousing is mis-shapen.

Re: Clutch judder
When I replaced the mounts I used supposedly high quality softer mounts from CW MMC - I think the idea was that the softer mounts absorb more vibration. the clutch begins to engage, the engine moves, this reduces the amount of engagement because of the mechanical linkage, the mounts then relax with ...

Re: Clutch judder
Many thanks for your replies. I have standard mechanical clutch linkage. May have to swap to hydraulic clutch when I upgrade. Or use another hole which I drilled in the drop arm many moons ago when I had the 6.5" Sprite diaphragm clutch. So, it doesn't sound like it's the driveline angle (it wa...

Re: Steering - Oil or Grease?
Oil or grease? Old thread but here's my twuppence worth : Disadvantage of oil is that it tends to collect in the boots/gaiters and often leaks. Disadvantage of grease is that it is difficult to get it to cover the whole rack and once it is 'cut through' by the movement of the rack / pinion will not ...

Re: Rear hub gasket
E.S.M. parts website says the thickness of the original gasket was 0.006" which seems correct - at least for me : I have 0.008" clearance between the hub outer face and a straight edge positoned across the outer face of the bearing, so deducting the median of 0.002" (i.e. how proud th...

Re: Dynamo to alternator .
I was waiting for someone to mention flat batteries pulling a lot of amps! You make fair points and to be on the (very) safe side a thicker cable can be used which also future proofs for any added circuits. In practice, I've had an alternator for decades and never had any problems with the existing ...

Re: Dynamo to alternator .
how thick a wire? There is a misconception that you automatically need a cable to match the alternator's rated output - so e.g. if you had a 18 ACR 45 AMP alternator then you'd need a cable capable of handling 45 amps. This is not the case. An alternator will only output what is demanded of it. On ...

Re: Convertible rear springs - 5-leaf or 7-leaf?
From my own experience, 7-leaf Traveller springs and Spax adjustables (fitted by a previous owner) on a 2-door saloon resulted in an overly firm, choppy ride, even with the dampers set to their softest settings. I agree with the above. I had 7-leaf springs with a lowering kit, 13" wheels and S...

Re: Lower trunnion
Well I finally succeeded by removing the front suspension arm, slackening off the rear nut on the lower pin AND putting the steering on full right-hand lock (it's the offside supension I'm working on). The upper trunnion was then just able to swivel off the pin. It is now all cleaned up, greased and...

Re: Lower trunnion
Yes I have tried all that and like many other people have found it impossible - there is nowhere near enough play and I am not going to use a crow bar to force it.
