When we fitted an alternator back in the 70's, and converted the Minor to negative earth, it had the original fuel pump which worked fine after the conversion, with no mods to the pump at all. As has previously been stated, it is only the 'electronic' versions that are polarity sensitive.

That's interesting. The earlier BMC Parts Manual for the Sprite/Midget lists the switch with a change point of 12CC/Da/H12411 on, but nothing shown on the exploded parts diagram, whereas the later BL Parts Manual simply states '1275 Engine' for the reverse light switch with no introduction date!

Don, I cannot say for certain, as ours is 1958, so does not have the dash surround, but it is unlikely that a Unified thread was used originally on the body. The attached file shows the layout of the front and rear engine/gearbox mountings. The front mounts should have the rounded edge of the large hole facing the rear. The positioning of the front mount is controlled by the 4 mounting bolts, and should not need to be enlarged, elongated or anything else...

From distant memory (we now have a Toyota 5-spd), if the metal gearbox to crossmember mountings are switched side-to-side, it will position the whole engine/gearbox assembly wrongly - is that right? The rubber mounts are symmetrical, but the metal ones are handed left and right. Might be worth swapp...

Yes if you could get one for £10/15 that would be well-worth doing. When you get it make sure that you flush out the oil separator thoroughly to clear out any muck and debris.

John, That means that you could use the 4.22 carrier as the base for the rebuilt 3.9 ratio, but it will make no difference to what is required to build it - bearings, shims, crushable spacer, thrust washers, seal etc. Also you cannot just put all the 4.22 parts into the 3.9 carrier without setting i...

That would suggest the diff needs rebuilding/resetting and that bearings themselves are not the cause of the whine. Can you check to confirm that neither diff carrier has an oil filler in it? Swapping between diffs is not likely to help as the crucial set up is between the crownwheel and its pinion,...

Straight EP90 and no more than GL4 rating. GL5 will 'eat' the phosphor bronze components in the diff itself. I would always go for a well-known oil provider.
