Re: Fitting rear wings

Sorry, Its a while ago now. I've just been and looked if I had any left but I've used it all up. From memory I got it from our local branch of Wickes but I guess any "proper" builder's merchant would do. The B&Q/Homebase's seem to be more "pretty" DIY rather than "get yo...

Re: Fitting rear wings

Morning all, Yes, I used a sealer when I put everything back together. I like you was concerned about moisture in the joints. I went for a black bitumen type gutter seal. The stuff that never hardens. I thought it better than a silicone sealer. I put plenty on in both gaps ie between the piping and ...

Re: Parking Lights

Hello all, Replying to Jalopy, I vaguely remember my Dad having one because at that time, all cars had to be lit when parked on the road at night. Batteries of the day weren't that good so this was a way of having only one bulb rather than all 4 sidelights on. I think the law was changed so you didn...

Re: Midget 1275, Ford Type 9 5 speed, concentric clutch slave

Hello all, I'll go with that too. I have mechanically operated clutch which uses the Ford "tube" as a concentric guide for the clutch release bearing. To make the release bearing concentric, the release arm has to slide about its centre pivot. I got round it by making some side linkage pla...

Re: Battery care?

Morning all, My vote too for a solar charger. I've extended the leads of mine to reach a window and it just hangs in the garage window. Its inside the garage rather than outside in the weather and even though its not in a particularly sunny spot, its gets enough light even through the glass to keep ...

Re: Water loss

Evening all. It depends how full you are filling the radiator. It might not be leaking anywhere. When looking down inside the radiator filler, you only need to have the top of the radiator core covered by about 1/2" or so of water. If you fill the radiator to the brim and then put the cap back ...

Re: BUMPERS

When I renewed my bumper blades many years ago, I got "cheap and cheerful" and got what I paid for. They lasted about a year before the chrome just peeled off. The second time around I went to the Birmingham bunch/David Manners Group. Proper chroming apparently features a layer of copper w...

I can vouch for the Australian spanner too. So much easier with the right tool.

Re: 5 speed box crossmember.

Hi all, I had the same problem as Chris with the sierra dog-leg cross member peeling itself out of the chassis legs. My remedy was to repair the area and reinforce it putting the captive nuts back in. Then I welded a piece of 1"x 1" angle iron across the back of the cross member which gave...

Re: 1098 clutch pressure plate

Hello BMC and Phil and thanks both for your advice. Yes, you put things very well Phil. With the clutch now "almost" sorted ie I need a more substantial one, I can move along the line. The Sierra gearbox will be ok and the halfshafts are already uprated which then just leaves the diff to p...

1098 clutch pressure plate

Hello everyone, I was just wondering how much horsepower a 1098 clutch pressure plate can transmit before things become marginal? Obviously its more than man enough with a standard 1098cc engine and I have one in my 1275 Minor combined with a Ford driven plate and a Sierra gearbox. Again it gives no...

Re: Fitting a 9.5 gall tank to a Traveller

Hello chaps, I looked at fitting one of these larger tanks - admittedly to a saloon rather than a traveller - but when I phoned up about them, they are taller from the mounting flange to the top of the tank which means there isn't enough room left to fit the spare wheel in under the floor. I'm not s...

Re: Where do these fit?

hello, yes, the ESM description is correct for where each of them go. The first buffer goes between the bottom of the wing and the bumper valance. As you say, some cars don't have them, some have 1 each side and others have 2 each side. I've got 2 each side mainly because the wings I fitted many yea...

Re: Exhaust to manifold

Hello, I'd go along with BMC here in supporting the exhaust with a jack. Its easier to see how everything's aligned when the clamp isn't in the way. For my previous attempts, it was a thin smear of paste on the mating face of the pipe and manifold, jack the exhaust up so its lightly but securely pus...

Re: Chassis plate

Hi all,
Going back to the original post, I needed someone to do a new plate for me so I took the blank to an engraver - tankards, sports medals etc. They did a nice tidy job in the original's style and charged me £4.
Cheers, Colin.

Re: 1275 a series with a Shorrock

Hello again and thanks for the superb advice – especially the link to the installation photo. My first thoughts were to take a “flat” timing cover and weld in a separator can so it points towards the supercharger i.e. being in the gap of the supercharger belt. There’s not much clearance if the belts...
