Re: spilt window fitting

I have searched on internet last year and there was a very good video showing a step by step guide to doing this difficult job. I am now at the stage to refit my screen but want to get the headlining done first as I think that job is even worse than fitting the windscreen. I understand some replacem...

It is a fiddly job, especially if the old pin is tight to depress, but It can be done.

Try soaking in WD40 overnight.

Re: Ignition barrel change?

That's because your 54 car has the pull start - it would have been fine if you had fitted a later switch with the solenoid start - even though you are obviously not going to use the twist start position on the switch.. However - as long as you have it sorted now ! Exactly why I posted this informat...

Re: Ignition barrel change?

OK... yes the barell can be changed... but I had a problem. I saw a post that said the early pull start ignition switches had to be replaced as complete assembly, but that was wrong. First make sure battery is disconnected. Remove the switch with bracket that is retained by 2 screws under dash panel...

Ignition barrel change?

I have a new lock set that according to ESM listing fits ALL 4 door Moggies. I have fitted the boot and door lock and now need to attempt the ignition barrel as obviously want one key for all locks. However I have read that you can not change the barrel on my '54 split screen because ignition lock i...

They are banned already, many MOT stations will remove these to carry out the test or vehicle would fail.

Technically Sat Navs stuck to the windscreen also impede vision and are not legal.

Re: Paint Prep

Autobahn. Re-read my post please. I am suggesting the "amateur" might not know that filler is hygroscopic not they should not know. I am surprised you read that into it as I have read my post over and over again and cannot find any reference to "should not know". You wrote : Our...

Re: Paint Prep

Autobahn. It's one thing to stick to your gun on a subject and another to just start making stuff up. No one has at any point recommended the application of any refinishing product over rust, loose, cracked, chipped or poorly prepared paint. My original recommendation to apply body filler over a ke...

Re: Paint Prep

Our audience here is the diy enthusiast and as such the advise given is aimed at them. They are more likely not to consider or even know about the absorption of moisture into the filler and more likely to leave covering the filler with a coat of paint for a while after application. Provided the bas...

Re: Paint Prep

Just one more thought on this.... If the repair was finished by wet block flatting prior to primer and not dried properly then this is the only way I could understand any moisture might be retained in the body filler, it would then get trapped by the paint. I never wet finish body filler so maybe th...

Re: Paint Prep

All I can say is I am apprentice served panel beater by trade, over 40 years and can honestly say I have never experienced problems with rust under my repairs unless the repair has been damaged again and cracked to allow moisture in or the panel has perforated and allowed water ingress from behind s...

Re: Paint Prep

Redmoggy ... Body filler should not be applied to bare steel. This contradicts every how to guide I have ever read. However the reason behind it is that Polyester fillers are some what Hygroscopic. They wick moisture from the air and although can be dried that moisture has already started the proces...

Re: Blocked fuel tank?

Could not actually see the end of fuel pick up pipe in the tank through the filler neck, and there is a anti surge plate inside between the pipe pick up point and fuel sender gauge, so unless someone knows different I would say no filter was fitted? I removed the sender unit and it was siezed in the...

Re: Paint Prep

1) remove all old paintwork, this can be done with a sander or paintstripper. 2) prepare by rubbing down with 320 wet and dry in soapy water. 3) wipe over with pre paint degreasing agent. 4) make sure anything that is not to be painted is properly masked. 5) paint with a good two pack (2K) primer us...

Blocked fuel tank?

Restoring a '54 split screen that had not been run for over 10 years. Engine was started by direct fuel supply to carb after servicing engine and it runs nice on a factory recon 803cc engine. Petrol tank was removed for welding of boot etc and any old fuel removed and blown out with air line. Now ta...

Re: Owning a Morris minor without a garage.

Only problem as with any classic car is the doors and windows need to be 100% water tight to protect the interior and electrics.

If the paintwork is sound and all seams properly sealed and the under side undersealed and waxoiled then you will be ok.

Thanks for confirming it's possible as I was thinking of changing dash to earlier 'gold/jukebox type.

I am restoring a 803cc '54 4dr split screen with cheese grater grille but with central speedo.

MM dash

Does anyone know if a split screen MM series was ever fitted with the later dash as generally fitted from '55 onwards.

Basically was there a transition period when the last '54 MMs may have used the newer dash layout?

Re: What carb?

It's not an 'elbow' - undo the two bolts and remove it to expose the carb flange..... That's where you attach your air cleaner.... Seems obvious to me... I've done my best to explain - you seem determined to be obtuse... But thanks for your comments. You are now on my 'naughty step' - so I won't be...
