Gearbox cover/ floor seal
Before refitting the transmission tunnel/ gearbox cover to the floor with its multiple brass screws, I'd like to apply some sort of sealant to reduce noise/ squeaks/ draft/ dirt. I have removed an ancient gunge and wonder if some sort of dum-dum was used originally. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
John

First time on the message board since the revamp and I've just found this! Very sad, we've lost a pal. Loved his comments, he could have almost been a Yorkshireman.

Re: gearbox rebuild
My box failed a few months back and I have only just completed the rebuild. Last time I wanted a Baulk ring box I paid £2 and it worked fine so I was a bit surprised at today's £100 for an unknown to £500 for rebuilt (well it was 1970). I contacted John Evans who advertises in Minor Matters and he s...

I joined a Morris Minor Club because I agree with its ideals. If these changed I would not remain an MMOC member.
Years ago, I voted to join a Common Market but now it seems this "Euro club" wants to govern us from Brussels. I no longer want to remain a member.

Re: Halogen Headlights.
Check out the bulbs that come with them, it may be worth spending an extra tenner on some good quality bulbs if you do a lot of night driving. I was very impressed with Halogens but absolutely bowled over when I replaced the cheapies that came with the kit with some Philips that came top in some ind...

Can't win! My magnet is so strong my wife can't pull it open. I need new rubber spacers perhaps? Still, as the gearbox has just collapsed I suppose it can wait.....good spare gearbox anybody?

Re: Traveller wood
Woodies are the experts and are very helpful. I had Ray Newell's book for Christmas and the section on wood by Steve Foreman was really useful. I followed the advice and was very pleased with the Sikkens products, giving an annual coat for protection without unnecessary darkening the wood.

Re: radial tyres
For a radial tyre if the aspect ratio is not quoted it is 80%. This is a nominal value and will vary according to the manufacturer. 145 is at the upper limit of the tolerance for a standard 3" rim (originally designed for 5" or 5.2" cross plies). Many fit 155 tyres on these rims witho...

Re: Mightier 1000 indicator problem
Check which bulbs are flashing, if it is flashing too quickly on one side it is usually because one of the bulbs has failed, it is the wrong wattage (5w instead of 21w) or a poor connection to the bulb which is not flashing. With indicator on wiggle the bulb that isn't flashing and check contact in ...

Re: Sealant/ putty ??
Just used Sikaflex 291i to seal gaps between aluminium and wood on my traveller. It is flexible and waterproof and used in boats (so was readily available locally) but not sure I got the same code as when I was fitting new a new ash wheel arch a couple of years ago as this seemed a bit messier!

Just used wire wool and white spirit to clean up my wood and then gave it another coat of Sikkens Cetol Filter 7 before the winter. Under 2 hours work and pleased with the result. Just need to get the waxoyl now out and crawl under....

Re: What tyres for SMM 1949
<<There are 500 tyres 20/05 R14 diagonal tubless, which can be applied to the factory wheels>> Don't understand designation here, 500 14 is cross ply with width in inches. (the R = radial and should be in mm) Diagonal here I think refers to cross ply as opposed to radial. No idea what 20/05 refers t...

Re: Key issues
Unlikely any of the barrels are the same after nearly 50 years. Ideal is to buy a new set of matching barrels (about £30 ish?) and fit them all - one key then does all! I have 4 different keys for Bertie and I'm always fiddling for the right one...

I think the IssigonisKid posted about his wood roof rack. My roof took too long to repair after somebody fitted a rack in the past and I hate the noise they make, but each to his own...!

The experts are Woodies and I followed their advice from the chapters on woodwork by Steve Foreman in the Morris Minor Traveller book by Ray Newell: Sikkens Cetol HLS followed by Sikkens Cetol Filter 7. I didn't need to add stains as I got the colour I wanted by using the Sikkens system on my sanded...

Brake Light Switch - Warning!
On a recent club run, a friend commented that either my brake light switch was faulty or I didn't brake much. I often check that they are working when reversing into the garage, checked again that they worked and attributed it to my smooth driving (I have a phone app that measures my driving style a...

Re: Need some help on Full Steel Traveller from South America
Lovely bodywork!
Is it possible that the float/ jet is sticking open and flooding fuel through. I would suggest getting a rebuild kit and stripping the SU as they can be made almost as new and perform so well.
