Re: MGB-GT question?

However the answers to my question has assisted in finding out the purpose of ...

MGB-GT question?

I know some of our knowledgable folk also run or have run a MGB. I have just acquired one and I can't work out what a relay is for and can't find it in the manual without knowing what it's for. It's in the engine bay bolted to the inner wing offside. There seems to be from the bulk head end three in...

Probably just cooked the diode pack. They can be changed. Google the alternator type and the pack might come up.

Re: Rheostat not functioning?

No, the connection is made by the wiper to supply the output connection. If I remember the rheostat is providing the negative supply, this might affect your readings when testing earlier.

Check to see if the head is not sitting on the top edge of the water pump and stopping it seating fully on the block top face, it does happen with some water pumps apparently.

Re: Silicone brake fluid

It won't cause any rust problems Les, it is used to protect metal from corrosion it is often found in spray on lubricants. The only problem I know of with it is if you get it on the paint work it can cause silicon spots when painting over, you often have to sand the paint down to the metal to get ri...

Sounds like it could be a big end or main bearing on its way out if the noise sounds like a clanging.

Re: Total Loss Salvage Value process

It looks a bit twisted to me, could end up being a big job. The fact it is a convertible does not help as the lack of roof may have allowed the base to twist beyond the engine bulkhead. I hope it is not the case though and it's the pictures telling porkies especially the first one.

Sounds like you need to replace the rotor arm, it might be tracking to earth via the shaft it's mounted on.

Re: MM overheating.

iirr if you remove the thermostat you have to fit something in its place otherwise the water only circulates round the front of the engine and does not reach the back and so causes over heating. I think it is some sort of baffle that you fit in place.

Re: Gearlever, selection

You might find using the palm to push the gearstick in changing gear helps. Use an upward or downward movement and at the same time a slight sideways push works well. Good for racing changes too.
