Re: Any Volvo 240 owners here?

I was looking for a photo of my father's first MGB GT V8 (Which I am hoping to trace) and came across these of the Volvo. It's hard to credit how much time has passed since those days. If I had room to keep it (It was a good four feet longer than the Morris), I wouldn't mind that car back, though I ...

Re: Any Volvo 240 owners here?

My father had a new 245DL in 1975. If I could have changed anything, I'd have added the optional overdrive and perhaps an extra carb but it was an excellent car. I do believe it's boot was bigger than my Traveller's boot  . Mind you, it took up a lot of room in the garage.

Re: Worrying

The village idiots will foul it up and everyone will grind to a halt. I don't think it will make any difference to my collectors policy. I think we have more to worry about from certain politicians I could mention, such as those who think that a blanket 20mph speed limit will solve the problem of pe...

I have always referred to the cars as "It" but as to the Traveller, since it is named after Oscar Blaketon, that would make it a him.

Re: Progress

I like to be in control, with a car I can work on myself. I can't say I've enjoyed the moderns I have driven, as they seem to lack feel and the last hire car I drove had a mind of it's own; engine stared once when I was out of the car :o and then the indicator wouldn't cancel. I expect the computer ...

Re: BRITOOL sockets

I have Draper AF and Whitworth sockets as well as Draper combination spanners. They are not vintage but maybe 10 years old. I’ve always liked Draper tools. Good quality without breaking the bank. I also have an AF ratcheting combination spanner set by Facom. These are very nice and they would have ...

Re: calling the police

Regarding ‘This Country’ comment,——— I rather like it. Especially when I watch the world news. As a youngster, I used to see the news of earthquakes and other natural disasters and think I was lucky to live in Britain. In those days, having never been further than offshore islands, I was far more c...

Re: calling the police

To put this into perspective, there are a minority of irresponsible cyclists, just as there are a minority of irresponsible motorists, but to then demonise all cyclists/motorists is not helpful. Certainly the idea, expressed earlier, that cyclists routinely wish to 'literally mow down men women &am...

Re: changes to historic status

You won't have any trouble with fitting disc brakes. It's a while since I looked at this but I recall that if a mod was done more than 30 years ago (As some of mine were) or improves the safety of a vehicle, you will be OK. See https://fbhvc.co.uk/mot-exemption-information & https://assets.publi...

Re: Alta cylinder head

Phil, So the reason I am ' here' and on the 'modified minors' forum is my 'Alta head' saga, I have been on the hunt for an Alta for nearly 25 years and whilst I have nearly got one a couple of times over this period I always got pipped at the post, so I managed to get one about six months ago (at l...

Re: Narrow gutted

I don't know why but the A30 looks narrower than the narrow Minor. Maybe it's the straight sides. If the cars had gone up like my council tax, the Minor would now be about £100000.00  . In all honesty, £11 751 sounds very reasonable, compared with a new Mini at nearly £23000 (Even £18000 sound...

Re: Narrow gutted

Don't forget the original prototype did not have the raised headlights. It would be interesting to see a 'doctored' photo of a lowlight to get a better idea of the aesthetics of a 'narrow-gutted' Minor (other than from old photos of the prototype). I found a lowlight full on front view and doctored...

Narrow gutted

I don't know whether any of the narrow prototypes still exist or whether they have been photographed next to a production Minor. I have doctored an insurance photo of my car (Just removed the raised bonnet section) and I can't honestly say it looks "Narrow gutted", as Lord Nuffield suggest...

Re: What do you want me to tell you?

Personally, I'd like to see the MMOC commit to maintaining this forum, as it is an invaluable source of information that has built up over more than a decade. I agree, unfortunately there are others who are obsessed with the numbers on facebook.... I am delighted to report that as a result of the a...

Re: Twenty years

My mother had a hair appointment last week, so I took the opportunity to stock up on some sand and cement (May not get much chance to use it but just in case.....and if we get a Spring next year, it'll be there for me). Naturally we used Blaketon and yes, we got Blaketoned. This time it was in the b...

Twenty years

It’s 20 years, today, since I became the owner of a Morris Minor (The first owner, Mrs Fern - I wonder if she is still with us, owned it for a few days under twenty years, so I have just become the longest owner). I recall the day well. My late father and I went to Manchester, to view the car and ha...

Re: Electrical Gremlins fuses blowing any ideas?

The Morris and the 1275 Midget have those but the others all have the red (Motorsport derived) cut out keys, since the batteries are either in the back (Switch under boot floor) or don't have standard terminals. In the case of the Midget 1500, it works out that I can remove the key from the driving ...

Re: Electrical Gremlins fuses blowing any ideas?

Not strictly relevant but having seen how wiring can burn, when there is a serious short, I think a battery isolator is very important. I was lucky that I happened to be there, when it happened with my mother's car and I cut the offending wire before much damage was done. The cut out is bypassed wit...

Re: DVLA Service Reaches New Low...

I've organised it that my cars are all taxed from the anniversary of when they were registered new and aside from the Minor (Which has the MMOC reminder disc), all have repro tax discs from http://poplargreg.com/ . I know when all the cars were first registered but this reminds me. I usually get the...
