Re: Blowing fuses

I tried all the green wires on the fusebox , it was the wire to the wiper that was acting as an earth.

Re: Blowing fuses

Sorry Geoberni
What I meant was the wire is acting as an earth (using a test lamp, it lights the lamp as an earth connection would). The car is 1962 so no voltage regulator on the speedo.

Blowing fuses

Hi, Have a question on electrickery. The Minor I am restoring is blowing the ignition fuse every time it is switched on. I found by removing the speedo from its place and leaving it dangling on its wires the fuse would not blow but on replacing the speedo and switching on the fuse would melt immedia...

Re: fitting layshaft

Phil was right ! I had put the wrong laygear in. I'd had three laygear sets which looked identical to me but I managed to pick the wrong one. Either of the others would have been fine. There are no part numbers on them, so you have to count the number of teeth which in the case of a 1098 Minor are 1...

Re: fitting layshaft

Thats pretty much what I've been trying to do. Unfortunately when it comes to lifting the laygear into mesh the roller bearings inside the laygear are not lining up with the access holes for the layshft and no amount of fiddling will make them line up. Unless Phil is right and I have fitted the wron...

Re: fitting layshaft

Sorry! I'm probably clutching at straws here anyway, I doubt if that will turn out to be the cause of the problem. All the laygears looked the same and they would all have come from Minors. It may be a few days before I can check it out further.

Re: fitting layshaft

Could there be a slight (very slight) difference in the laygear clusters? I had three sets of laygears and it's possible I may not have put the same set in that came out.

Re: fitting layshaft

I don't know the history of the box , only that it was noisy, so I hoped new bearings would cure it. It is not possible to fit the new layshaft, which is the same as the old one, as the holes where it is inserted cannot be lined up with the roller bearings.

Re: fitting layshaft

Hi Phil I understand what you say but the problem is not the layshaft itself. If you imagine you are looking at an assembled box that just needs the layshaft fitted then the roller bearings at each end of the laygear must be centralised or there is no possibility of inserting the layshaft and that i...

Re: fitting layshaft

I don't know about part numbers but all the parts I have, new or used, are for standard 1098 Minor gearboxes. The layshaft is part of an overhaul kit supplied by Heathrow Transmissions including all bearings.

fitting layshaft

Hi Reassembling my gearbox having fitted new bearings. Am trying to fit new layshaft. Clearly gearwheels and laygears must be brought into mesh for the layshaft to be inserted but I'm finding this impossible. If there was no 3rd motion shaft fitted or it was fitted with just first gear the layhaft w...

Thanks Les, I just didn't want to put it all back together and then find I'd put the wrong part in.

I can't believe I actually got the photo thing to work, now you can see what I'm on about. Anyone know if this is the right part?

second speed synchro

Hi
Have got new bearings for my gearbox which is in bits at the moment. Would I be right in saying the plunger in the photo is the correct part to fit in the hole in the second speed synchro? It's about 14 mm long. If it's not the right one maybe someone can send a photo of the correct part.

Re: Ignition warning light

MOJ or Geoberni
I'm probably being really thick here but why do you need to physically turn the coil round, is it not just a case of reversing the connections on the coil?
