Re: Conversion from discs back to drum brakes

Although I am generally discouraging owners to "upgrade" their cars and feel that my own Minor 1000 is perfectly adequate with its drum brakes, I can see no downside to having discs fitted. I'm surprised by your comment that the discs are expensive to maintain as I don't see why that shoul...

Re: VIN numbers - Series II

I agree that a car with that chassis number would have been built in late 1953. The specification you have also dates it to that period, so there seems little doubt. I would contact BMIHT as it seems that they have made an error. Not the first time

Re: dual circuit brakes

The OP says he is looking "for a solution" but doesn't say to what..... I know that all of us drive modern cars which have dual circuit braking systems but have we ever actually needed them? I haven't. I have driven a Morris Minor for more than 50 years fitted with standard drum brakes and...

Re: Cylinder head removal 1098

Oh dear! Well, now you know why you had no compression from the front 2 cylinders. That gasket is certainly blown away.... The head looks to have quite a crack in the same position too? That may not be worth trying to repair. Cylinder heads are not difficult to source though. Impossible to see how d...

Re: Cylinder head removal 1098

That's what I would do IF I was concerned about it. In reality, although the later design seems to be a backward step in a way, it doesn't trouble me really. It is still a joy to work on such a simple and well designed car 8)

Re: sudden engine failure 1098

Agree with Stephen. Most likely the head gasket - and more usually between cylinders 3 and 4 because they are the least well cooled I guess but that is still the most likely in my opinion. Ivor Searle engines usually pretty good :tu1:
Probably got to whip the head off. Not a big job though.

Re: Variation on the engine number queries

The 10V engine prefix indicates a Series 5 1098cc van with closed circuit breathing. I don't believe that the 10V prefix is anything specific to the van. I have a late Minor 1000 car with an original 10V engine prefix. The 10 denotes a 1098cc engine. The "V" was used to denote an inline e...

Bad luck. I don't think I've ever suffered from coolant loss from that area.

Re: restoration of my minor convertible

They are just an angled plastic spacer. They echo the chromed metal one on the outside. A quick ring around the Minor specialists should find you some if yours have gone missing. I've never found anything for a Minor 1000 very problematic to get hold of. The cars are well served by parts suppliers -...

Re: Hello

Lots of things could change within the next four years but it is good to have a plan. A Minor 1000 is a very practical and useable car and quite economical too. The Traveller is very versatile and makes a useful car BUT you have to pay quite a lot more for a Traveller in the first place and then you...

Don't forget that 1953 seats and 1969 seats are completely different.
They bear no resemblance to each other in terms of appearance OR construction

Re: Fuel gauge reading half-full when empty

Thank you. My car is a Series 2, which has now got a later Speedo with bimetallic gauge & voltage regulator. The fuel tank is a 6 1/2 gallon but the sender is the early type used with the gold gauge. The car is converted to negative earth. It the tank wasn't brim full, I'd take the sender out. ...

I do hope we'll soon learn what your new transport is to be! I am often tempted by something different and have run all sorts of cars over the years. There are still cars I would like to sample before I have to eventually give up the few remaining pleasurable miles of driving!

Re: 1954 split screen

Congratulation on acquiring a Morris Minor. We will all hope that you get lots of fun from it. As you suggest, the VXU registration is a recent issue given by the DVLA as a re-registration after an import or registration number sale or similar so it will be difficult to trace much history from that ...

Re: Canvas Back - Moggy Pickup

Don't forget that the canvas cover was an optional extra when the pick-ups were new. They were not fitted to all of them. If your truck didn't have one, it won't have the fittings such as the timber parts across the roof joint which you might also need to obtain as well as the metal hoops, clips etc...

Re: Bonnet adjustment

There is a certain amount of adjustment where the hinges are fitted to the bulkhead AND where they are fitted to the bonnet. Also, the bonnet catch itself can be adjusted up and down where it is attached to the bonnet itself. Open the bonnet and look up inside it at the catch. You have to remove the...
