Noisy exhaust

Just had a new mild steel exhaust from ESM fitted to my Traveller. At low revs it sounds ok with the classic Moggy sound on the over-run. However, get to 50mph and it becomes noisy. Lift off at that speed and it sounds almost like a bang. At 60mph it is very noisy indeed. The exhaust isn't blowing a...

I meant to reply with my thanks earlier - Purolator it is.

Re: oil filter type

Thanks both, but I'm not being clear - my fault. There are indeed bowl to housing seals with each filter, so one of these does fit. There are however two others - more like washers really. The first sits below the plate on which the filter sits. Mine has split (below this is a metal washer and below ...

oil filter type

How do I know if the filter housing is Purolator or Tecalemet? - I have a 71 Traveller. OK the same paper element can be used in each but the seals differ and I can't see any identifying marks on the housing.

Re: Steering squeak

Thanks for that Don - I see what you mean. The rubbing block is pretty worn but the spring metal arm isn't making contact with the brass sleeve and so I don't think that's the cause. To confirm this I gently lifted the arm away from the sleeve whilst turning the steering wheel and the squeak was sti...

Re: Steering squeak

So I got the socket and the job was much easier than I expected. Once the steering wheel was off and the indicator shroud was removed I could see the felt bush. There is no play in the column and the bush looked OK from the top, so I oiled it, let it soak in for a couple of hours and then repeated t...

Re: Steering squeak

Thank you all for replies - that all makes sense. I might just remove the steering wheel because I can't visualize what the top of the steering column looks like until I've seen it. I mean I can't imagine where to squirt the oil. I'm assuming the socket won't fit over the horn spring and that I'll h...

Re: Steering squeak

Thanks for that. I have a late car and I can't see how, having removed the three screws, I would remove the indicator shroud without first removing the steering wheel. It would have to come off the top of the column. If I did remove the wheel, what size is the nut? It larger than any of my sockets -...

Re: clutch

Finally got this replaced with an new AP clutch which is great. Verdict on the vibration - broken anti-rattle springs.

Steering squeak

My steering has developed a squeak coming from the top of the column which I am told means that a felt bush needs oiling. Does that sound right? To do this I have been told to remove the steering wheel, but if anyone could explain exactly what I do I'd be grateful. Should the bush be replaced?

Re: clutch

Thanks for that. There is a drop of dirty oil hanging from the jiggle pin. I have removed the pipe that leads from the engine breather to the carburetor and although this is patent (it is easy to blow through), it is oily on the inside. How do I check the rest of the breather system. Do I simply rem...

Re: clutch

The engine mountings etc look OK. Not sure how old the clutch is - the engine has done 114 000 miles. Can the clutch become contaminated with engine oil in some way?

Tuning

We've just got back from touring Ireland - 1200 miles without the hint of a problem, but a couple of problems have arisen suddenly. The car started immediately the other morning, just as she does normally, but then stalled. There seemed to be a slight misfire under acceleration (bit jerky) and she w...

clutch

Drove the car yesterday and parked up for about 20 minutes, but on leaving there was quite a strong vibration on lifting the clutch pedal as I moved off. The clutch seems to engage and disengage OK and the noise isn't there when driving along - only when engaging or disengaging the clutch. There see...

My car is a '71 traveller - should the hole in the drum through which the brakes are adjusted have a rubber cover?

Re: brake squeal

Thanks for all the advice. I have limited experience. Yes the squeal is just before I stop. Funny thing my modern car does it too and the garage tries to charge me £40 each time to clean the discs. It's not really loud but just a bit annoying. I hear other modern cars do it to. I think it is since t...

So when using brake cleaner I spray it all over the brake components. I mean there is nothing that I need to keep the cleaner off.

brake squeal

My brakes have started to squeal a little just before coming to a stop. I guess that means cleaning out the drums. Is it best to simply brush out the dust once I've got the drum off or is it better to use brake cleaning fluid. I have heard of people spraying the the back plate with the shoes in posi...
