Re: Knocking from engine on medium revs.

Andy, Have you checked the clearance between the exhaust pipe and the body work? Modern replacement pipes can get rather close and if the engine mounts are old and sag a bit the pipe can touch the body work when running under load and give a rattle as the engine leans over slightly from the torque ...

Re: Oil Pressure too high?

You mean it runs at higher pressure, now, at normal operating temperature? Still too high, IMO.

Re: Knocking from engine on medium revs.

I am just a little surprised of the knock only at certain revs. I would expect a big end to knock under load, particularly while accelerating (not so much off-load). Not saying it’s not a con rod bearing, but just not quite convinced. I might be checking engine mounts or timing chain, but until hear...

Re: Clutch not “working

Anther approach might be to hold the clutch pedal to the floor with a length of four by two (or similar) wedged up against the driver's seat. Might be an idea to disconnect the return spring using that method? Why? As long as the spring is not extended beyond its compliance with Hooke’s Law, it wou...

Re: Oil Pressure Switch (leak)

You miss my point. Oil pump/lube failure at high rpms is usually an unavoidable (by then) catastrophic failure. Deteriorating oil pressure cannot be monitored if it remains just above the warning level. Oil warning lights are considered as ‘idiot lights’, while gauges are fitted for useful informati...

Re: Oil Pressure Switch (leak)

Bill is generally correct, but that is because usually the oil pressure has suddenly fallen to zilch. Plain bearings only need about 5psi to keep them apart; old pressure switches were typically 7psi.

Stick with the idiot light. Ignorance is bliss, as they say.

Most things are fixable - at a price.

Rather depends on a few more details - and the price, of course.

Re: Morris Minor Pickup 1965 not starting

Seems to me that this new owner might be well advised to obtain a multimeter and learn how to make basic electrical checks. They can show up some of the simple faults which a newbie might come across. Indeed, a fairly basic meter is all that is needed for all the likely electrical faults on these ol...

Posted earlier in the thread: ESM replaced my fuel tank complete with new sender unit in November 2022 and also the filler tube hose (they used rubber hose). And now: The old gasket (which is not old, only fitted months ago) had torn in two places. Perhaps I overtightened it but I remember being car...

Re: Steering column pinch bolt problem

Hi I fitted a new steering rack today and track rod ends, final bit was to replace the pinch bolt on the bottom of the column, it went a fair way in, in fact the end of it is exactly flush with the exit hole, problem is it will now go neither forwards nor backwards. It's kind of loose but with tight...

Re: Ominous Engine Signs? (magnetic sump plug)

Just for info. ‘Sludge’ is not particularly abrasive. It is so fine (particle size) that it will mostly go through filters. It flocculates and settles out slowly, possibly sticking to some rotary moving parts. Those agglomerated lumps would be the nuisance and oil pumps can pass filterable sized par...

Stephen Not “quite common”. VERY common. Ford, Vauxhalls, Peugeots, Citroens, Land Rovers, Volvos, VW ju...

Re: Beehive Springs -again!

It might be interesting to find out how the myriads of auto-mechanics, over the years, dealt with the apparent problem of replacing these springs? Like me, I suspect most used a favourite pair of smallish pliers (at the time) to ease the toggles in place.
