Starter motor growling

My starter motor is working perfectly well but as it’s thrown out of mesh when the engine fires it makes a loud growling noise as it slows down and stops. This is most noticeable when the engine fires but doesn’t start - maybe it does it all the time but the noise is drowned out by the general cacop...

Re: Cylinder Head Refurb.

I guess ESM sent me the wrong guides - I definitely ordered 1098cc ones as in your first link - just checked my order! Something for people to watch out for when ordering!

Re: Cylinder Head Refurb.

Those are the ones I used but I first machined them to the same length as the originals - I think they’re supplied to fit all the A series heads including the 1275cc which I believe need longer ones. It would be a bit annoying if you didn’t have access to a lathe although I suppose you could let the...

Re: Cylinder Head Refurb.

Thanks for the response/reassurance - my valve lapping skills are not as bad as I feared. I’ll definitely be looking at no.1 again - It appears to be largely leaking through the exhaust valve. I didn’t have the valve seats recut - I was prepared to do so but as all the valves and seats appeared to c...

Re: Cylinder Head Refurb.

After completing the job (new guides, springs, top hat seals on inlets, rocker shaft and a light skim) I decided to check the handy work by filling the chambers with parrafin to check for leaks. I filled them right to the brim and after 10 mins there didn’t appear to be any leakage however after 1hr th...

Re: Coolant circuit

Well I think I’m fully clued up on the cooling system now (thank goodness is the cry 😀😀). This forum is a fantastic
resource for us mere mortals especially when we’ve access to expertise from people such as Phil.
Thanks until the next question pops up in my head.

Re: Coolant circuit

I did’nt express myself very well regarding the heater return - I mean’t to say that I assumed that the returned heater water joins the bypass water in the pump inlet to be recirculated. Your comments regarding the 940 head illustrates the necessity of keeping the heater valve open when there is no ...

Re: Coolant circuit

So before the thermostat opens,is the flow - through the block - to the cylinder head then down the bypass hose to the pump where it joins the heater return (assuming the heater valve is open) to be returned to the block?

Coolant circuit

Can someone tell me the pathway and direction of travel of the coolant through the engine, cylinder head and heater in the following situations:- a) When the thermostat is closed. b) When the thermostat is open. I haven’t got a problem - I’m just trying to straighten things out in my head! (I know - ...

Cylinder Head Refurb.

I’m refurbishing a 12g202 head for my 1098cc engine and I have a couple of questions :- When I have the face skimmed should I just have it cleaned up or would it be a good opportunity to raise the compression ratio a bit? How many thou should I remove? If I turn the engine over with the underbonnet ...

Re: Distributor prices

I don’t have a problem fitting a new vacuum advance - I usually remove the distributor to put new points in anyway (much easier on the bench) but I was querying whether it made sense to pay the same money for a vacuum unit as a complete distributor. If no one has tried one of these units I think I’l...

Distributor prices

The vacuum advance on my 1968 bog standard 1098 convertible is no longer doing it’s thing so I have searched for a replacement which will cost around £30. During my search I came across a website on eBay offering a complete 45d Powermax distributor for around £30. Normal price for a new distributor ...

Re: Brake adjustment

As a follow up to previous post - I have fitted a set of new shoes which has sorted the problem for now! During the fitting process I decided to remove the cylinder pistons to clean and lubricate them and to my surprise one of the cylinders was different to the others in that it had a piston with a ...

Brake adjustment

I have run out of adjustment on my front brakes while still having plenty of material left on the shoes - a common occurrence it would seem! While being aware of the larger adjusters available I wondered if a cheaper solution would be to put a thin shim between the metal piston and sealing rubber in...

Steering wheel

I am thinking about swapping the steering wheel on my 1968 Tourer for an earlier wire spoked model. I am looking on eBay etc. but am unsure as to which will fit! They are variously described as banjo fitting, 48 splines,etc.etc.
Can someone unravel the mystery for me please.

Re: Tracking Gauge

I've had a look on YouTube as you suggested but I'm a bit confused as to where to measure - some show measurements being taken to the front and back of the tyre and some to the wheel rim, surely the same toe in can't be used for both places. Where is the 3mm toe in for the Morris supposed to be meas...
