Re: Morris Traveller Restoration Newbie

that is the issue, when you have sanding too thin and try to add more weld in you blow through again and it ends up looking worse. I guess the answer is turn the power down and use copper on the back

Re: Morris Traveller Restoration Newbie

Thanks alot for your comments, all taken on board and I will defo give it a try. Most of that piece penetrated so should hold fine as its only the boot floor. I have just replaced some of the boot floor where the dome is but stupidly cut off the execess level with the chassis rail before realising t...

Re: Morris Traveller Restoration Newbie

As an inexperienced welder I sometimes blow holes in what I am welding, if this happens how do you fill the hole? I seem to struggle and just make it bigger when I try to fill it. I have read you can clamp a copper plate onto the back to fill holes, has anyone done this with success?

Re: Morris Traveller Restoration Newbie

Yes I practiced on a few bits of metal first but it never feels the same :) I think the welder is set up ok as it does sounds like bacon, its just getting used to welding where the panels are touching as opposed to where there is a mm gap or so. Im sure they will improve with practice but for a firs...

Re: Morris Traveller Restoration Newbie

Two more quick questions :) If the weld has been ground a little too much would a layer of JB weld be suitable to buld it back up and sand flat, this should also fill any pin holes left from my poor welding. Also in the picture third from bottom where the metal looks solid but very pitted, is this a...

Re: Morris Traveller Restoration Newbie

Today was a long day in the garage with some high points and some not so high. It started off with a big area to fill as seen in the last picture along side the fuel tank recess towards the rear. After much cutting, bending and hammering I eventually got a piece to fit ready for welding. (High point...

Re: Morris Traveller Restoration Newbie

Redmoggy - I have no idea what im doing but like to research and ask questions before jumping in to make sure the job is done as well as it can be, I love the idea of buying more tools so think I will get myself a joggler tool, that way I can joggle and hole punch the panels and then spot weld throu...

Re: Morris Traveller Restoration Newbie

Mark, Thankyou for the pictures, they really help. Would it be a good option to clamp the rear apron in the right place, draw around the edge and then cut away the extra metal either from the apron or the floor. Then clamp and seam weld the two together? Surely having overlapping panels will create ...

Re: Morris Traveller Restoration Newbie

Does anyone know the correct location for the rear apron? Should this go under or above the rear floor behind where the fuel tank is?
My assumption is that it fits undernear and is seam welding with the rear floor coming down as far as the angled bit to horizontal on the apron.

Re: Morris Traveller Restoration Newbie

The wood isnt attached at the rear on the near side, the wood was rotten and the metal was rusty, the back doors did close but not perfectly. I am currently debating whether to take the wood off completely as im not convinced it is suitable to line anything up with, the question is then do I buy new...

Re: Morris Traveller Restoration Newbie

Stripping the rear end continued today, still not quite sure what I am doing but hoping it will become a little clearer as I begin to find solid metal :)

Re: Morris Traveller Restoration Newbie

Today I made a start on the rear end, my current plan is to swap the rear apron and then begin to build the rest around it. Hopefully this sounds feesible. The pictures below show the current progress, a few questions I have: 1. How do you cut straight lines in the metal to replace panels? Angle gri...

Re: Morris Traveller Restoration Newbie

So I decided to start repairing / replacing the panels on the rear of the car, initially the nearside inner wing area. This job was made alot harder due to the fact the nice spot welds which drill out quite easily had been covered by dodgy repair patches seam welded on top. As the layers slowly got ...

Re: Morris Traveller Restoration Newbie

I am currently looking at new floor panels and was wondering what peoples thoughts are around whether to go for a 1/2 panel floor or 2 x 1/4 floors. I will more than likely need at least one step sill which comes included in the 1/2 floor but can be bought seperate on the 1/4 floors, I have heard th...

Re: Morris Traveller Restoration Newbie

A bit belated, but how did you get on with the soda blasting? I'm just starting on a similar project and was considering buying a soda blaster but don't have any experience of how easy to use, effective or messy they are. Hi Gavin. The company we purchased it from have been great in helping us set ...

Re: Morris Traveller Restoration Newbie

Thanks guys. You make it sound all so easy :)

I've taken a screenshot of one of Neil's restoration pics as shown below. How has he removed the floor panel from the flange as per the lower arrow (if, and assuming this is not spot welded)?

Re: Morris Traveller Restoration Newbie

So most of the underseal has now been removed using a combination of heat gun / scraper and wire brush attachment on an angle grinder. I also couldn't resist on having a little play with the soda blaster on the engine bay! What's great is that I can now see exactly the condition it is in! Unfortunat...

Re: Morris Traveller Restoration Newbie

Thanks for all the information, I guess things become more clear as you get stuck into the restoration. Currently the car is fully stipped with just the woodwork remaining, the plan now is to make a spit and rotate the car to remove the underseal. I have puchased a blasting pot from http://www.milla...

Re: Morris Traveller Restoration Newbie

Is this the sort of thing you mean
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Morris-Minor- ... 2548.l4275

Quite expensive but if it includes every nut, bolt and grommet it may be worth it
