Re: Toyo or Nangkang.... that is the question

If you think Nankang tyres have a soft sidewall then you should try the Toyo! These are incredibly soft. The Nankang tyres are a lot better with the new tread pattern and I would use them every time where there are only budget tyres available. I even use the same Nankang tyre (albeiit a different si...

Re: Top Trunnions & Suspension Creaking

Make sure you clean out the trunnion of any swarf before you fit it, its a machined part and may have a build up inside. The creaking is probably a dry bush, its a good idea to put a smear of copper grease on the inside of the bush but not the outside to allow it to pivot without creaking.

Re: radiator top hose

There is nothing wrong with a kevlar hose. There is a problem with one brand of hoses sold for many classics. They are terrible. A poor quality rubber with a kevlar content consisting of bit of kevlar rather than a layer. These cheap hoses have a white sticker saying "kevlar reinforced - made i...

Re: Lowering a Minor - Torsion Bars - Marina?

But - presumably they must reduce to the original sizes at the two ends - which must put tremendous strain in the metal section there...... Why would they reduce to the original sizes. They would have to be a monstrous diameter to need to taper down at each end. My 100% uprated set are the same dia...

Re: EBC 'Green Stuff' Pads

I would definitely recommend avoiding the Ferrodo DS500 pads as they still need a fair bit of heat to avoid feeling wooden. Probably great on trackdays but not on the road in the winter. Greenstuff seem OK although I still find them dusty! I think ATE OE pads are the best by a long way for pedal fee...

Re: How to put telescopics on with lowering blocks

Is the kit pictured the one actually fitted? I can't see a problem really as the dampers should never see full droop. Is the damper bracket mounted in the correct position? Perhaps it nees to go above the bracket for the radius arms if it is not already fitted like this? Unfortunately the Spax rear ...

Re: 1275cc Oil Leak help!

If it's a 1275 it should have closed circuit breathing. The canister in the timing cover should be connected to the take off on the carb or to the inlet manifold via a PCV valve. The canisters usually get blocked up, its worth cutting it open, clearing it out and re welding it. If the closed circuit...

Re: Keeping it BMC

apparently, a standard 12G940 (1275) head will flow better than any rediculously modified 12G295 (1098ish) head. So much more worthwhile making that fit. Riley/Wolseley diff is 3.7:1 which should pull ok with a well modified 1098, especially with that 1275 head. You might get shot down for the peda...

Re: 803 cc 1955 Performance

I suspected they'd either used 948 forgings or knackered ones as you suggest. I came across one that had only been partially ground on the web that fouls the dipstick 'bump'. I guess the chap doing the work must have gone to lunch and then forgotten about it! Sadly I've thrown away cranks I've taken...

Re: 1275cc engine to 1098 gearbox

The 1275 Spridget ring gear is identical to the 1098 except the teeth shorter giving the starter clearance. Any good specialist should be able to supply them, as well as the spigot adaptor.

Re: 803 cc 1955 Performance

They ground the crank to suit the rods, then ground the old part number off and put the 803cc crank part number on the box.

Re: 1275cc engine to 1098 gearbox

If you replace the ring gear with a 1275 midget item there is no need to mess about with the starter. The ring gear is usually pretty chewed up anyway.

Re: 803 cc 1955 Performance

Bore out the block and fit a 948 crank....... Could be good for 80/90 bhp........ :D Leyland did this! they used 948 cranks that were adapted. One of the things they did was grind down one of the counter weights to miss the 'lump' in the block casting that the dipstick passes through. I assume they...

Re: wiper motor troubles

Wiper motors are very reliable but unfortunately 40+ year old lubricants are not. Quite often the rod that operates the wiper rack seizes on the large gear. Just by greasing this up you can usually get them going again. Is it a good idea to take them apart, clean out the gunky grease and repack it a...

If the tracking is set quite toe out they can feel very unstable in corners. Of course they should be slightly toe in.

Re: leaking rear wheel slave cylinder

Usually filthy brake fluid. It is always a good idea to bleed through the cruddy fluid before fitting the new cylinder so as not to pump it all through the cylinder when you fit it. Especially on the rear as bleeding will not allow the fluid to flow through with the bleed nipple being before the cyl...

Re: Damper Arm Pivot Bolt

Unfortunately the one that let go on my car was on a car I'd recently bought so I can't say how well it was attached as the nut and lock washer went AWOL. I think its safe to assume these need to be properly secured and not by a frail lock tab that's been straightened out a 100 times! A bit of lockt...

Re: Damper Arm Pivot Bolt

This isn't as uncommon as you may think. It has happened to me once and I know of two other cars apart from this it has happened to. In all cases the top trunnion has not come off the pivot but the rear most bush has escaped as well and the trunnion has been able to move around. I think the large wa...
