Re: Vanessa '68 2dr saloon
So the BGT has been completed - at least it is running and drivable, even if the engine smokes like its laying down a smokescreen  so rebuilding the engine can wait until the winter. So I've reverted to working on Vanessa. I'd got as far as the offside rear wheel arch, where the rear suspension...

Vacuum advance numbers
I'm in the process of repairing a couple of vacuum advance units off Morris Minors ( replacing failed diaphragms), and I'm curious to know what the numbers relate to, eg 5/18/3 and 5/17/10. I've compared the internal springs in the vacuum units which I assume have different compression rates, althou...

Re: New Messageboard is now live
Must be me , when I read a new post ( highlighted in red in the ‘ circle ) shouldn’t it then revert to blue !! Am I doing something wrong 🤔 Just tried this - I think you have to reload the front page for it to register and turn blue? Worked for me. Question I have is can you rotate photos you post-...

Re: Vanessa '68 2dr saloon
Thought it was about time to update this thread - hadn't realised it had been so long. So I haven't abandoned this project, it's just that I decided I needed a running fixed head car for longer journeys, my other cars being a 1275 Midget and 2004 MG TF. So I bought a '78 MG BGT which had spent the l...

Timing cover flatness
My timing cover was leaking substantially after I replaced the chain, between the lower two bolts ( the crankshaft oil seal wasn't showing any signs of leaking) . I removed it and checked its flatness on a surface plate and I can get a 15 thou feeler under it between the bolt holes virtually all the...

Looking good, i'm about 2/3 of the way through my rebuild and I've got a similar rotisserie using a 2" water pipe, I lock mine off with webbing straps attached to roof beams.

Re: Spare tyre/wheel-does anyone not carry one?
I wonder if you could find a space saver spare at the breakers with the correct PCD which would fit in the space available? It would at least get you home.

Re: Reverse selector plunger
So I've been playing around with them this evening and discovered that the plunger bodies are not identical - the spring recess in the plunger bodies that use the ball bearings are 23mm deep, the bullet shaped plunger body recess is 30mm deep, so that when using the same spring the overall assembled...

Re: Reverse selector plunger
Phil all the plungers are identical, it's just that I've fitted fibre washers to two of them which are hiding the waisted part. The second thread you reference is mine, when I was trying to adapt a standard extension and add a reversing light switch. Anyway I'll reassemble the extension with the lef...

Re: Reverse selector plunger
Phil I think we may be at cross purposes, as the reverse selector plunger doesn't engage with the control shaft, it engages in a notch in the reverse protection plunger ( 100 in the illustration), providing the positive feel of going through a 'gate' when you move the gear lever across when selectin...

Re: Reverse selector plunger
The gearstick play plunger 22a84 is a brass tube if you google the part number (108), so it's not that. However, looking at the Moss catalogue in more detail it looks like there are two options for the reverse plunger - 105 (a ball bearing) and 112 in the image? Both parts are listed as BLS110 which...

Reverse selector plunger
Just rebuilding a gearbox with a new extension with reversing light switch, and I've got two versions of the reverse selector plunger. 20201101_193654_crop_73.jpg Is there any difference between them? Also how far in do most people end up screwing it in? I found if I screw it well in I can't select ...

Re: Garage Floor paint
I used this paint https://www.toolstation.com/leyland-trade-floor-paint-5l/p64607 after vacuuming the floor carefully to remove the dust. Gave it two coats. Did the job, no more dust, easy to wipe up the inevitable oil leaks , and appears hard wearing ( been down 6 year ). I was looking at that ear...

Re: Bonnet bracing bar, help please?
I would suggest you take the welded route - my bonnet brace has been repaired by bolting with countersunk screws, and the paint has failed around the bolt heads - with the stresses and flexing of the bonnet encountered in normal use any bolts used in this way are likely to move even slightly resulti...

gearbox numbers
I've got 4 gearboxes - two are 1275 Midget boxes, two are 1098 Minor boxes. The serial numbers stamped on the casings are: 1275 Midget MB 1527, and MB 39010 L 1098 Minor M 28737, and MA 19 708 9 I assume the B on the Midget boxes signifies the later B type gears, but wondered if anyone knows what th...

Thanks Phil, I've been told by various people over the years that the jumping out of gear in overrun was worn syncro, but I was always sceptical. Below is the second gear, how worn is this?
