What's It Worth?

Wasn't sure if this belonged here, but also wasn't sure where else it could go. I've got the opportunity to save a 4 door from a sausagey end, but the owner doesn't have an asking price. The car's basically a rolling shell, but is mostly solid with no rot in the usual places, just smatterings of sur...

Re: Van engine rebuild

Keep an eye out for an unleaded 998 Mini head - They do turn up sometimes, and shou;dn't cost a vast amount. Inlet valves are slightly smaller than the 1098 Minor head I think, but compression ratio is higher, which I suspect makes it no less powerful, and maybe a little more economical :)

Re: Help/ Ital engine/marina bellhousing/toledo box.

The Marina box is the Triumph one, isn't it? Aside from the stalling issues (maybe forcing the pressure plate, and so flywheel and crank too hard at the thrust bearings?), these suffer from too much play in the pivot pin for the clutch fork.. I say too much play, the pins are known to fall out - And...

Re: hello from the side of the road

(I wonder why the wire isn't soldered on??- looks to be crimped.) Not only is it crimped, but the terminals on the damned things fatigue and fail along the rivet.. Or at least mine did, and it was maybe 2 years and 500 miles old. I dug a 45d out my spares box, to bypass that whole issue. And then h...

Oh - so you were already -re-using the head gasket ? No matter - I have re-used gaskets many a time when I was a poor student (as opposed to current status of poor pensioner!). Seriously - get stuff like this locally - no need to pay fancy ESM price and postage!! ESM do a full 1098 engine gasket se...

Re: Distributor Problem

There was a series of posts about this guy before and his electronic kits. The price is too good to believe. Anyone bought one before? I think it was him I bought a kit for a 25D from last year. And it was about a fiver cheaper back then, too. After fitting, I had to adjust the timing a little to g...

Re: Exhaust to manifold question

As long as the surfaces are clean before assembly, and there's plenty of paste applied, those clamps should hold for a while, even though they're not ideal. The only reason I use a 2 bolt type at the moment is I misplaced half the pressed metal type when messing with engines recently.. The clamp tak...

Re: 1275 engine

Midget engine is easiest, all this talk of changing flywheels has never made much sense to me, as they use the same gearbox input shaft (in fact, aside from some beefed up internals, same gearbox!), and just slot into place. The clutch is a diaphragm rather than coil sprung thing, which some mifght ...

Re: Lifting out the engine...

When I removed and replaced Puddles' engine I used a trolly jack and lifted it up clear of the engine mounts. Then heaved it over the front cross member... I had taken the front of the car off first... Me too... Though I sort of regretted it when trying to get out of bed the next day. Which didn't ...

Define split. It's possible to have a small tear and still have some fuel make it to the carb, although you'd almost certainly notice a drop in power through fuel starvation. If you think about it, a small hole will mean a drop but not toal loss of pressure, and that drop will be from fuel passing t...

Not sure if it helps or not, but it claims there's different pinions available :)

Might be worth trying the MG specialists to see if there's any truth to it.

Can't you just change the speedo drive in the box? I was under the impression there's different "colours" available for the ribbed box, each one with a different ratio.

Thats got my attention Leo what difference would that make.
As alluded to, if the diaphragm lets go petrol can leak into the sump pretty easily as the diaphragm is the only seal between pump and engine.

That looks a very nice car - the chrome bumper models are the ones to go for! It would not have been 1275 originally - must have had engine swap at some point. Are you sure, I thought the 1275 came in around 66? As far as I know all cars with the bolted on hood (as opposed to the removable hood/ fr...

Just about all the panels are avaliable, and unlike packedup I havent had any problems fitting the few that I have needed. II've not yet had to buy any new panels for the Midget (I'm intending on going GRP as I can't afford ally, don't like rust, and want to save weight), but my comment was more in...

All versions are fun cars, easy to work on, reasonable part prices for most items (very similar to Minor) and cheap to run / own. I've got a mk2 (heavily modified/ chopped about by previous owners). Some parts are silly money from MG specialists and are the same as Minor parts (1098 clutch kit spri...

I currently have 5 cars (the pickup, a Triumph, a Midget, and two Metros). Admittedly at least two of those need to go, but that still leaves me with more than one. Why, when I can only drive one at a time, should I pay tax for each one? Never mind tax exemption for the pre 73 cars, where's my multi...

If you have the best part of £1000 to get a good turbo lump, and then the not trivial amount it would cost for the new crank (I assume the crank is replaced in these conversions, and not modified masssively instead) plus other machining work, then go for it. I'd go with a 200 quid 1275 Midget/ Marin...

*Sigh* http://www.motuk.co.uk/manual_810.htm That's a very useful site (again..) for this kind of question :) The basic answer is a Minor needs one rear facing mirror. So if you've got the interior/ rear view one, then you don't *need* a wing/ door one. However, you might still want one so you can h...
