Re: Speedo not working
Mystery. Thanks for the info about spinning direction of the inner cable. I had the speedo hanging out of the dash, disconnected both ends of the cable, reconnected the speedo end and connected an electric drill to the gearbox end and got the needle moving. All connected up and on the road, I've now...

Re: Speedo not working
Undid the sp eedo cable from both ends and I could turn the inner cable with finger pressure although it was exactly spinning. Took the inner cable out which wasn't broken or frayed and greased it. Not much diff erence in terms of how it would turn. Does the inner cable have to turn very easily with...

Speedo not working
Early this morning I realised that the speedo wasn't working at all. I greased the inner cable ( but not the top coulple of inches) about three years ago following years of the needle jumping around and all was fine. But now nothing. Fine on Friday.
Is a broken cable the most likely problem?

Re: sudden ignition failure
It's always the coil! At least in my experience of the last three years. This time Ive gone for the Lucas sports coil which was cheaper at ESM than the regular Lucas coil and they assured me they'd had no returns. I've gone for the push in ht terminal rather than the screw in because it's a bit more...

Re: sudden ignition failure
"It's never the coil" but if this has gone, it's the second one in less than two years. Is there a known problem with new coils. The last one was Lucas ( made in Shanghi, I think) and this one is a more expensive NGK

Re: sudden ignition failure
Thanks for the video link. Even looking at my spark in the dark, the one in the video is much bluer and much stronger. Also, my spark will only jump a 1/4 inch gap.

Re: sudden ignition failure
When the end of the king lead is held quite close to the engine block there's a regular orange spark. If Im using my multi meter correctly, there's a resistance of 1.5 ohms in the primary circuit (measuring across the two contacts) but I can't get a reading on the secondary circuit measuring from + ...

Re: sudden ignition failure
The carbon bush in the cap looks fine and it springs back and forth easily. I'll have another look at the spark from the king lead tomorrow and report back.

Re: Brake shoe lining in bonded
Yes, that's what I thought. If I could find the receipt for these shoes, which have only been on a year, I'd ask for a refund. Clearly a safety issue.

Brake shoe lining in bonded
Hello,
Been having a few brake issues and on taking of one front drum I found the lining on one shoe had come off completely and on the other it's becoming in stuck. Can they be re stuck on?

Re: Interior light
Interior lamp back emitting its vinttage glow. Thanks for everyone's suggestions. Making up a test lamp helped but I might need to splash out on, and learn to use, a multi meter.

Re: Interior light
My car's been running with a 15a fuse and a 30 amp fuse. The only ref to fuse sizes I can find in any of my books says the horn/ interior light should be on a 50 amp fuse and everything which operates only when the ignition is on should be 35amps. Should I be concerned? I now feel I need to get this...

Re: Interior light
I think I must have a 12volt supply because I've blown a fuse. The fuse I've blown was a 15 amp. The only thing not now working is the horn. Mysteriously, the ancient spare fuse is 35amp. I can't find anywhere in my Haynes manual if the 15amp fuse is correct, although it's been like this for about 2...

Re: Interior light
I've cleaned up the switch which works fine with the bulb lighting up if I connect it across the car battery. However, it won't work when connected to its two wires which emerge from the headlining. Is there a way of telling if the purple wire has current running through it?

Re: Interior light
All good advice, chaps, much of which I hadn't thought of. The horn's working. I did do a bit of wire fiddling above the shelf below the dash so I'll check that before I go any further. The bulb seems very loose, so perhaps it's a loose connection or the board is broken. Have to take daughter to tru...

Re: Interior light
Not lost the four tiny screws (yet) but the ends of the fitting where the cover attaches with two screws is behind the headlining so I might need to slit a bit of the headlining to winkle it out.

Interior light
My interior light has suddenly stopped working and it's not the bulb. I don't have courtesy light switches in my '57 saloon. If I unscrew and remove the unit from the headlining, is it straightforward to get it back in neatly. I have fears of some disaster involving removing the headlining!

Re: It's never the coil?
Well, the bashed up old coil he had on his van instantly solved the problem, but he also tested the old coil with his multi meter.
