Re: front hub problem

I don't often post at the moment but I do have first hand experience of screwing up fitting front wheel bearings...and the consequences. It's confession time. I was distracted at the point of fitting my front wheel bearings a couple of years ago (I'm normally very careful). The upshot was that 40 mi...

Re: You have got to see this!

many years ago I worked in a power station. The generators were hydrogen cooled. We checked for leaks with a spray filled with soap and water solution. (it was pressurised with air for the leak test  )

sometimes the simple solutions work best.

Re: engine colour

(faded) gold as it's a gold seal, but the head is now green after I fitted the U/L one.

It's being replaced or refreshed at some point this year, so I guess it'll then all be green.

Re: Wheel Bearings haven't solved problem

Is there a particular way each individual bearing should go into the hub assembly? crikey yes! As aupickup says, make sure they are the correct way round, both bearings. If they are the incorrect way, tightening the hub nut actually creates play in the bearings, and ultimately the bearing is likely...

Using an anti-freeze with a rust inhibitor? Did you empty the rad through the rubber hoses? Maybe the tap is just rusted up? Are the waterways in the block very badly rusted? If they are, not sure how to clean them out (or if you can?). Normally I just backflush with the hosepipe, actually back, the...

Re: What mileage do we do a year in mogs

12000 - 15000, mainly a 50 mile a day commute, A and B-Roads, usually a 200 mile motorway to Yeovil once or twice a month, sometimes more, once a week isn't uncommon. It misses a few days if I take the modern for a change or because I want to get home quickly on the MWay. Newcastle and back a couple...

Re: Bah! Broken down!

I'm terrible at gapping points, it's just one of those jobs I'm really hamfisted at. I use a dwell meter on a gunsens tuner thingy.

Glad that it's running now. Well done :D An easy fix!

Re: New electronic ignition kit for £21

I upped my average mpg on my last one from 60mpg on a run to 65mpg. :o wowsers, 65mpg, that's impressive. I'd be over the moon with that! Very surprised too, as generally mine is driven in a "spirited" fashion  although I'm treating it gently at the mo, it's my only car. Andrew

Re: New electronic ignition kit for £21

I do similar miles to aupickup Dan, I think all 3 of us do quite a reasonable amount, it's good to drive them, that's what they're there for! Maybe Reliants are picky about ignition with them being a V6 with a single set of points? Don't know as I've never had one. Mind you, 24 mpg (is that reasonab...

Re: New electronic ignition kit for £21

OK, I have recent experience of this, in reverse! I had a lumenition kit fitted, I also had one on my midget a few years ago. Recently the one on my minor failed, presumably with a short to earth, it fried the cable to the coil and the unit in the dizzy went up in a large plume of acrid smoke. I had...

Re: Bah! Broken down!

I'd vote for condensor (usually worse when hot, especially starting).

Have you cleaned (and gapped as suggested) the points though, especially if it's stood for a while, a quick rub with wet and dry usually cleans any rubbish off them.

Re: Fuel Filter

The pump filter's pretty coarse compared to an inline filter. The pump one's more of a fine tea strainer, getting the big chunks whereas the inline one is a bit like a coffee filter, getting fine powdery stuff. They're right though Alex n Ane, these are usually fairly tolerant of dirt, hence the rud...

Re: Fuel Filter

don't think there is one as standard, although is there a gauze strainer in the fuel pump? (not sure as I have a non standard pump). I have an off the shelf in line filter in between the pump and carb which does trap stuff, but not that much and it gets changed every other service or so. If you're h...

Ignition failure

I fitted magnetronic (the lumenition one with the disc fitted under the rotor arm) a while ago and it's been fine for a good couple of thousand miles. However...today on the way to work it hesitated, there was an acrid, burning smell and the car died. Quite a considerable amount of smoke came from u...

I think BMC's point was that if it is connected to the manifold the draw on the breather would be better and therefore better ventilate the crankcase, therefore reducing oil loss

(a byproduct of blowby is that more oil than usual escapes past oil seals, better crankcase ventilation improves that).

Years ago in derbyshire I worked on my Land-Rover and forgot to put anti-freeze in it. cue terribly cold weather and a totally frozen solid engine. I tried to start it and caused loads of damage to the water pump impellor (it was the horrendous rattling screaching noise as the bits broke off and lac...

surprised that it's like that if it's recently been rebuilt.

Is it really a plume? As others have said, some coming out is normal when they're disconnected/opened, a plume isn't.

If it isn't using oil, it's running OK and not churning out blue smoke, just drive it.

I had mine fail within a few months of fitting it. It may have been something to do with the 2007 floods in gloucestershire where the car was well and trully dunked quite a few times. Either way, ESM replaced it and it's been fine ever since. Maybe because I carry a spare under the floor ;) I replac...
