Re: Saloon Wing Beading

Looked on the MMC Bath website and the beading (black) is half the price, and no doubt proven to be the right thing - don't know why I didn't go there first! Thanks - J

Saloon Wing Beading

I am putting together everything I need for my four door which is to have new wings and a respray.

What length of wing beading do I need? Is the stuff on Ebay at about 5.00/metre any good and a good price?

Re: Expensive Traveller at Aston Workshop.

This car has been infected by the Aston Martin sales hype - those cars are selling (or at least on offer) at ten times their value a few years ago, and to those buyers this looks like a little cheap bauble to amuse the wife until she gets tired of having to wind down the window and goes back to the ...

Re: Correct Number Plate Style

I recently bought a set from the MMC in Bath - I assume they get them from one of the regular suppliers but they were about the same price. I chose 3 1/2 inch silver plastic digits - as my car is black with the contrast of the chrome trims, it looks good. The post 1963 type are 3 1/8 and don't look ...

I don't think most of us morris Minor owners care much about 'use by' dates - if it looks good and smells OK when opened then it's fine by me - and what smells better when opened than a well matured Minor?

Re: Indicator

I used to have a Lea Francis with the accelerator in the middle! I just knew that the first time I really needed to stop quickly I would mash that to the floor and speed towards the pram on the crossing, I could just hear the evidence - 'I saw that psycho deliberately run the baby down.' Before I dr...

Re: A different question on rear lights

He's a retired Garage Owner who's set up to sell off his old stock, and seek out more NOS stuff - he seems straight to me - and there's certainly nothing wrong with what he sent me - I'll be buying more. He trades on Ebay as 'Traditional Old Motor Spares' of 107 Walsall Rd, Little Aston, B74 3AY, te...

Re: A different question on rear lights

In the end I bought 2 new rear lamps, handed, complete with lenses and gaskets from a great bloke in Birmingham who specialises in NOS parts. They are the real thing, beautiful to behold, and I think he has some more. At about 55 quid each they seem good value to me - looks quite a lot until you pri...

Re: A different question on rear lights

I'd like to get them just right - can anyone tell me (questions questions...) what the height should be above the bottom of the wing and the distance from the wing join? I think I can cut reasonable gaskets from sheet rubber, maybe even with a rebate for the flange if I am very slow and careful - no...

Re: A different question on rear lights

Yes, thanks everyone, I have the series two lamps, new, and can see how the body coloured aluminium plinth mounts them to the wing. So - do I keep my original, pitted, early 1000 type bases when the wings are replaced, fit the new S11 type lamps on repainted plinths, which will look good but be out ...

A different question on rear lights

My 1960 car has original L549 rear lights, they are handed and the bases are much thicker on the outside than on the inside. I have a pair of new L549s, not repro, but they are symmetrical, not handed. I would like to fit them when I fit new wings in the next few weeks. I have seen a pair of cast al...

That is an excellent price for a 200 mile recovery - I used to charge 1.35 per mile. On the other hand, joining the AA or similar costs about the same.

Re: Engine Problems

If pressing the clutch is the cause of the stalling, (which you will usually be doing as you slow down to a halt) then there may be nothing wrong with the carb or ignition - it indicates that the carbon thrust bearing is near the end - a gearbox or engine out job, and might as well do the clutch, sp...

Re: Sad to hear..

Yes that is sad.

A local friend's wife had a 2 door, and on a roundabout a Tesco lorry turned over onto it, with her and two children inside - but, as reported in the paper, they were not seriously hurt - the strong rounded shape and thick steel saved them - but the car did not survive, alas.

Re: Engine Problems

The only engine builder I've heard of who didn't use gaskets (sometimes) was Bugatti and some 1920's racers - never had one of them apart but I assume the parts were lapped with grinding paste for hours by some poor apprentice! To put in a thinner head gasket would not raise the compression ratio by...

Re: Engine Problems

And another thought - one of the great things about the wonderful A series engine is it's resistance to overheating - unlike modern aluminium heads and blocks, that are so thin and weak that they are scrap after a light toasting, I have seen those solid iron heads and blocks still fine after long pe...

Re: Engine Problems

If the timing and mixture are OK, but the engine's stalling as it drops back to idle, it could be the float chamber level is too low. Bend the needle valve operating arm to make it push up at a higher level.

Battery Box

My car came with a battery that was too small, and was therefore braced, quite effectively but untidily, with wooden pieces behind it about 2 inches wide. I have taken off this bodge, and am going to put on a period looking battery that fits the space, and as an added benefit will have more reserve ...
