Re: The test for bedded rings in a newish engine
No problem there, rings were checked in bore for gap and installed perfectly. Oiling has nothing to do with valves as they face down. Oiling is all about rings sealing, and my theory is that if rings have run fitted well, there will not be a huge difference in compression,? providing of course that ...

The test for bedded rings in a newish engine
There must be a rule of thumb for the difference in compression between oiled and dry to confirm or deny that the rings have bedded in properly.

Re: Timing cover design A motor 948
Sorry Phil. The mention of the non hardening sealant brought up an image of the cork rocker cover seal weeping and I dropped that in without explanation, and was my mstake. I managed to get the stiffener from The U.S Sprite group. I paid over the odds for it but saves a lot of time messing around ma...

Re: Timing cover design A motor 948
First thanks phil for the design, and secondly thanks Islip for the hermatite tip, yes oil sneaks under the cork, and actually I was mistaken by thinking the felt timing cover seal was leaking, but alas it was the cover. I never got under to check just assumed it was, so when I pull the radiator out...

Re: Timing cover design A motor 948
Thought so. Its pretty obvious. Haven't got one in your back shed Phil? No matter I have a sheet of plate left over from a job I did and I can make one if necessary. Pretty easy but a nuisance. I do think its the later oils that escape easier than the old, exacerbating a flaw. Also I think the avail...

Timing cover design A motor 948
I have a weep from a timing cover, and I have a theory. Back in the 50s the oil was not as slippery as it is nowadays. Perhaps oils are sneakier. The spacing between the bolts seems to me a bit wide and although the elongated washers do compromise with that deficiency, nonetheless the fact remains t...

Re: crankcase compression and breathing problems
Thanks to Phil, I found a catch can with sight glass on line, and I will fit it on the suggested fuel pump cover plate. I bought a 1/4 BSP tapered tap yesterday to fit an air line fitting to the plate. A simple addition, that makes sense.

Re: Adjustable oil pressure fitting
Add on oil pressure adjuster is a bit of fun really. I used a self locking nut as a seal on the adjuster thread. I had to turn down the original knob as it was too big to pass the starter lug and bolt.

Re: Hand brake lever now too long
Shortened 70mm so as not to tangle with the rib cage gear change. Looks much better than a later lever I think. Didn't cut the control shaft until I threaded it down and chopped the end off. Works fine.

I apologise, as I had the letters back to front. Have the right needle, and thanks.

HS2 S.U needles in 1100 A motor single carb
I have ruined one set of plugs with an overly rich needle, in a reco engine, and having changed that needle I am having difficulty to get the tune point of engine rev lift at the 1/32 lift of the piston. Im not sure what speed the engine should be to try that mixture test, I have I believe a NA needl...

Re: crankcase compression and breathing problems
Yes well, theres no doubt that I have an overpressured crank case, and perhaps that is a lesser problem solved by 1 Use the fuel pump blank plate to add a crank breather with a catch, and 2 Improve the front seal wih the solid damper and the modified timing cover. I am grateful for the continuing he...

crankcase compression and breathing problems
I have learned something today and that is the design of the cam cover breather on the early motiors was designed to create vacuum as the vehicle travelled at a cruising speed, and Ive been corrected in relation to crank leaks that are more about the balance of air than excessive oil pressure. Well ...

Re: A series engine front seal leaks
Thanks again Phil, the damper I will get, and the replacement cover, and maybe a second hand side plate with the breather and fit it to the rear perhaps.

Re: A series engine front seal leaks
Thanks Phil for the link. I disagree with you on the rear main, my post was mainly concerned with the rear seal, and I do think 80 psi would have an effect on that leak, as I now run 60psi cold. The interesting thing is that the warm or hot engine pressure still stays a shade under 40 psi

A series engine front seal leaks
Two things. Is there an add on seal housing and front seal available for my engine. Secondly, does anybody sell a "speedy sleeve" a name used down here for a sleeve that is fitted to the front pulley housing to improve the surface where the seal runs. I notice N.T.G have an add on seal to ...

Re: Adjustable oil pressure fitting
Well, suitable in a way. The knob of the piece I purchased was too big to clear the top starter bolt end. Its O.K I can extent the shaft of the bolt so that it is clear, and also I recommend placing an o ring between the adjusting lock nut and the engine plug, as there was some gunk on the withdrawn...
