Identifying noise?
Hi all, Hoping the collective brains trust can help solve this one. I have a clattering noise on mid to heavy acceleration - usually when a lot of torque is being applied, so particularly noticeable uphill. The sound feels "central" so under the seats sort of area. I can't reproduce it in ...

Re: Head off
Think those tiny o ring seals are of limited use in my experience. Most had broken off when I did mine, and on replacement it was no better or worse.
Top Hat seals are the ones to go for but you'd need the later valve guides with the recessed groove for the retaining spring.

And... Breathe!
Just looking at fitting the pipercross mushroom air filter and want to make sure the breathing set up is correct. I have the oil separator tappet chest cover, which is linked to the carb. I also have a pipe from the rocker cover, which runs to the air filter housing. The oil cap is a non-vented type...

Vacuum advance
I've discovered while fine tuning the rebuilt engine (and struggling!) that the vacuum advance on my 25D is caput, and the most likely culprit. New bits on order so no big deal - however, when I come to play with the timing with the engine warm, do I move the dissy with the vacuum attached, or set i...

Re: C/H plug insert size?
Then I can only conclude this one has been drilled out in the past for reasons unknown.
The two 5/8 adaptors I have fit each other but not the head. Will see if the 3/8 BSP is better tomorrow.

Re: C/H plug insert size?
Forum isn't letting me post photos but since I took an internal adaptor piece out, I'm certain there isn't one there now. When I got the head it had the electrical temp connector attached, plus the adaptor piece for that. I removed both. As per my measurements, it's coming out at exactly 5/8 in size...

Re: C/H plug insert size?
Thanks Phil. I've just been down with my caliper - however I measure it, the hole in the cylinder head is definitely between 15.86 and 15.88mm - so allowing for my clumsy reading it's still 0.625" or 5/8 in size. The male thread on the adaptor I've measured a few times around the diameter, with...

Re: C/H plug insert size?
The adaptor arrived today... And it's the same size as my old one, so that must be 5/8 to 5/8 too. It still has space around the edge, which makes me think that the head has been drilled/tapped out by someone in the past? It is a small difference so I'm thinking that an 11/16 to 5/8 adaptor would wo...

Re: C/H plug insert size?
Love this forum! Thanks Phil.
Presumably that's 5/8 on both the male and female threads, which I think would work. I/D of the hole is 0.625" so 5/8...

Re: C/H plug insert size?
If it helps, the capillary type I'm currently using on a standard 1098 head has a male insert into the head (13/16 spanner size) and the capillary wire has a smaller male adaptor which fits the female side of the larger adaptor above (5/8 spanner size) However the threaded insert into the head is sm...

C/H plug insert size?
Hi all, When I was refurbishing my 940 cylinder head I removed an electric take off for a temp gauge, fitted where the plug would usually be, and also removed a very rusty and chewed up threaded insert. I'd assumed that this was part of the adaptor for the electrical take off. However I've just come...

Re: What pump do I need?
Thanks Phil, I have fitted the reverse of that first link - so a bar in the middle and space either side for a pin drive. However that first link with the right pump would also solve the issue. I think that because it's a 1275 head and the block has been pocketed in the past, the 1275 cam is a sligh...

What pump do I need?
Hi all, In the process of rebuilding an A series. Discovering a few things in the process, the latest of which seems to be that the 1098 block has been given a 1275 cam. In case the photo upload doesn't work the drive is given by the 3 pointed insert with a vertical bar. I assumed that the standard ...

Drilled bearing cap?
In the process of cleaning and organising parts ready for the rebuild of the newly bored block and realised there was some damage on the face of the caps, underneath the shell. It turned out it wasn't accidental but had been caused by a drill being passed through it at an angle - not once but three ...

Engine rebuild questions
Hi folks. I'm in the midst of rebuilding an engine for fun (strange idea of fun but it takes all sorts!) The engine came from a scrap car. It seems OK - looks like the bores had been redone to 20thou at some point, but to eliminate wear I'm having those put out to 40thou and will get some oversize p...

Re: Help! Convertible Bj.1955 Rear leaf Spring 5 or 7
Having asked my share of what others might have thought were daft questions, you'll get no ridicule from me! I think convertibles had 7 leaves as standard - if you measure the individual leaves and they come out as 7/32" thick (5.5mm is as near as dammit) then they're probably right. If they're...

Re: Replacing Timing Chain
Just an update and a couple of follow up questions! I've now fitted the duplex kit, and you were all right, it isn't as scary as it first seems! No oil leaks and the noise from the chain is gone so I'm very happy about it. The car is starting easily, idling happily and has no issues in static revvin...

Two of the journals were worn but not oval, but the middle was. Because they were all worn to different amounts anyway...
