Re: Side Valve Engine for 1950 MM

I have a bare late 918 block here if you wanted to do a slow rebuild. The harder part would be to find a crank that isn't already ground too far.

How deep are your pockets? :D

I've a couple here but the cost to rebuild one is over a grand plus labour so unless you can find a running/used one you might have trouble.

Re: Ital to Minor 1000 box

No flywheel bush required and the bottom plate can stay or be cut off. It doesn't interfere but can be used to hang a rag to catch the drips. :D

Can't remember what sized bush is needed. Phil will be along in a minute...

Re: Oil leak from Side-valve oil filter mounting

I changed the filter and oil yesterday on mine. Unscrewed easily enough with a leather strop with just a couple of drips. The HOF250 filter has a bypass and a drain-back valve so works well. No leaks. I'm going to order 2 more for the other cars. Strangely, I had to use almost an entire 5 litre can ...

Re: slip ring assembly.

The horn button just connects the purple to earth, via the steering wheel boss and then the rack. If your wire from brass slip ring to horn button has frayed then it'll beep all the time. Check continuity?

Re: slip ring assembly.

Purple wire from under the dashboard. It should have a ring terminal on the end.

Re: slip ring assembly.

Ring is insulated from column but wire goes up centre to horn button. 'Finger' is insulated from cast mounting bracket but wire goes off to horn (purple). Electricity kept away from steering components apart from the finger and slip ring which have to be mounted like that.

Re: Fuel cap hinge

Same as the other half of the link, isn't it? Not hard to replicate if you pull it apart. File a flat piece to shape and roll it round a drill bit in a vice. You have the bottom bracket that is welded into the tube?

Re: Fuel cap hinge

You mean 'spare'? You can't really adapt a later cap to take this mechanism. Is it just the links you need?

Re: Torsion Bar replacement

IIRC, the shot peined torsion bars were so well over-engineered that BMC only had 5 fail in service. Saw it in one of the reference books. If so, I'd say the chances of someone having brand new one stuck on a shelf is probably less than zero. A used one should still be good for another million miles...

Re: New vacuum gauge

Jet out of the carb of an old Fiat etc. Tiny little drilling in it removes the pulsing. I just shove it down the vac hose after filing it down to fit.

Re: Torsion Bar replacement

For labour charges it sounds about right but I'd question why both sides need replacing. I've never seen a bent bar even after I had a 60mph head-on crash with a truck. I'd love to know how on earth the bar got bent without ripping the entire shell apart in the process.
Got a photo?
