Re: Engine Problems

So Ive been playing about with the carb this week and I have to say Ive gotten nowhere. Tried adjusting the float and topping up the dashpot but that made no difference. I did get a serious fuel leak a couple of times from the fuel bowl, which sent me into a panic, don’t like fuel leaking over the t...

StillGotMy1stCar wrote: Mon Jul 30, 2018 2:31 pm Regarding the idle problem, check the carb dashpot level, I had a car that used to stall when returning to idle and topping up the dashpot with engine oil used to sort it every time.

Thats simple enough and worth a try.

Re: Engine Problems

Sorry for the 3 copies. Not sure how I managed that! If you use the buttons in the top right of an individual post (when it's your own), you can delete it....Delete.JPG No X option for these 3 messages for some reason but ther eis for my subsequent posts. Must be a "glitch", probably oper...

Re: Engine Problems

For the removal of baked on gasket goo use a flat ended scraper or make your own from a old file making sure that the file teeth are removed so as not to mark the head or block faces. A spray with Loctite gasket remover also helps but is not always necessary. The 'A' Series heads do warp and any wa...

Re: Engine Problems

If the timing and mixture are OK, but the engine's stalling as it drops back to idle, it could be the float chamber level is too low. Bend the needle valve operating arm to make it push up at a higher level. Timing and mixture are OK, I believe, but its definately stalling as it drops to idle. I wi...

Re: Engine Problems

If you mean after I replaced the head gasket for the first time yes, but if you mean directly after I replaced the core plug no never considered that but now you mention it it makes perfect sense.

Re: Engine Problems

Sorry its taken so long to update this post but time hasn't been on my side the last few months. I was eventually able to recover the Moggie from my dads last week. The night I got it back I had a quick look at the engine just to see if Id missed any cracks etc. Didn't find any cracks but I did, pur...

Re: Engine Problems

That is a valid point Phil especially as one of the other core plugs does look a little suspect! I may be able to get a trailer for a day and put it on that. I should have just recovered it when it broke down initially instead of nursing it to my dads, but of course at that point I didn't know what ...

Re: Squealing Front Brakes

Coatbridge. He had a second shop in Motherwell until about a year ago but closed that as it wasnt doing so well.

He doesnt keep much that we would use in stock but he is "old school" and understands and can get most things usually next day, sometimes same day.

Re: Squealing Front Brakes

Couldnt agree more, so I added a set the shopping basket. The end cost with VAT and carriage was just south of £50! I think not! Anyway its all sorted now. My mate who owns a small motor store and who got me the 8" shoes yesterday managed to get me a set of Lockheed 7" shoes today. The onl...

Re: Squealing Front Brakes

Agreed. But Im struggling to find Mintex 7" front shoes. ESM List Lockheed/Delphii but show Mintex as discontinued and I cant find them on Bull Motif's site at all.

I will check with a friend in the motor trade and/or extend my search to other MM parts suppliers.

Re: Squealing Front Brakes

I'll have a look in my copy tomorrow. Really at a loss on this. I have tried hammering the brakes but its not making a different, they haven't bedded in any more. It really looks like the diameter of the shoes is different to the drums. When I say they are squealing I mean they could shatter plate g...

Re: Squealing Front Brakes

Right, checked the brakes tonight an=gain and the front are definitely 7" despite everything saying they should be 8" on the front for a 63. The only think I didnt refit to the car when I rebuilt it were the front brake shoe steady springs because I could not get the pins to hold them in p...
