Re: Race Minor

I have raced against that Minor in the CSCC Special Saloon series. The car is beautifully built and pretty quick too, just needs more use.
I believe it is for sale as Chris doesn't have time to race it, quite a large price tag (£30k) but worth it I think bearing in mind the standard off preparation.

Re: BMC (British Motor Car Dist) Formula Junior Racing Car

Quite possibly VW gearbox, the Hewland gearboxes used VW casings as the basis for their gearboxes for quite a while I believe.

Re: Strengthened engine mounts

Hi Phil, Good to see you are still developing and hillclimbing your Morris. The class structure never suits Morris Minors but like you say, that isn't the point! You might recognise this, at typical run at Gurston in a Morris Minor! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kVHaM4YFYwA&feature=youtu.be (fr...

Re: Mk2 rear axle

Mine has a Mk2 Escort axle and withstood well over 400 bhp using 10" wide soft compound slicks in competition, admittedly with Quaife halfshafts and diff. 200 bhp or so is no problem for these axles unless you use very low diff ratios with very tall wheel/tyre combination when the torque increa...

Re: coilover front suspension

When I first fitted coil over shocks to the front of my Minor (with Minor suspension), I welded the lower mount to the lower arms and bolted the upper mount into the inner wing. Of course the brackets were quite large and properly supported, but were bolted all the same. I fitted these back in 1989 ...

Re: Front roll centres and spring rates

I ran about 1.5 degrees of negative camber but that was for cross ply racing slicks. Initially I did this in the usual fashion of packing out the eyebolt but with the last incarnation of that suspension I made longer lower arms in order to put the lower pivot back where it should be, I did this usin...

Re: Front roll centres and spring rates

The engine in mine then was atmo 16valve 2 litre - 190bhp at the wheels. The lower damper mount was as close to the lower swivel as you can get without it rubbing, really close, I think the wheel rate from the spring was in the region of 370lb/in. The anti roll bar was made fron a shortened torsion ...

Re: Front roll centres and spring rates

I established where the roll centres are many years ago, it depends upon what ride height of the suspension you are using. When mine was lowered a lot so that the top trunnion was above the point at which the lower part of the top bump stop should have been, and with 20" OD tyres, the front rol...

Re: Cams

The best road engine I ever had was the turbo 16 valve head on the 131 2 litre block. I ran this on twin 45 dellortos and used the standard turbo cams, pistons were modified flat top 2 litre ones. This was really torquey, did 40 to the gallon but ran out of puff over 7k rpm. I remember if I pulled a...

Re: How were body shells painted in the factory?

Be carefull if you get your shell dipped, I had a Hillman Imp shell dipped there (it was going to be a race car) and when it came back the roof was distorted. I think they just lift it in and out with strops through the window openings meaning that when the shell is lifted out it is still full of wa...

Re: sprite engine

If the spridget flywheel is dowelled to the crank then there is no way the flywheel bolts should shear off.

Re: sprite engine

Cranks for high power/high revs normally need to be dowelled to stop the crank/flywheel bolts fretting. I had to do this on my Fiat 2 litre and is normal practice for these engines when modified. Are the A series crank/flywheels dowelled? (I know the mini ones are on a taper so are not).

Re: F1 MOGGIE ?

When I used to do hillclimbs and sprints, my Minor was rock steady at 135mph (although still accelerating quite hard at this speed :o ) but could become unstable during extremely hard braking at these speeds due to the short wheelbase and the weight moving forward under braking. It used to corner be...

Re: EBC 'Green Stuff' Pads

No - don't need to! The drums work perfectly well - can't do better than lock the wheels, and my drums easily do that! I believe the discs are very heavy - not so the drums. And - I have never managed to fade them. Sorry, locking the wheels is NOT the best or quickest way to stop. A tyre generally ...

Re: ANYONE ON HERE RACE IN THE SWINGING SIXTIES SERIES

Yes, big dent in boot done when it rolled down the trailer into the back of the tow car, forgot that the hand brake wasn't on and that the winch wasn't connected (bloody idiot !!), the dent was from the tail pipes on the tow car. For once the Morris came off worse  I still have a brand new fib...

Re: ANYONE ON HERE RACE IN THE SWINGING SIXTIES SERIES

It only got a bit dodgy when absolutely wringing its neck on the race track and to be honest I was probably over driving the car a bit. Drive it to about 98% and it was bloody quick and very safe and capable, any car is going to get a bit twitchy when pulling over 1G in corners and drifting it on sl...

Re: ANYONE ON HERE RACE IN THE SWINGING SIXTIES SERIES

I used to hillclimb and sprint it. Initially it was fitted with an 8 valve 2 litre fiat TC with twin 45 DHLAs, reprofiled cams etc with Minor front suspension with coil over shocks, anti roll bar, plastic bushes, leaf springs at the rear with panhard rod, anti tramp bars and quaiffe LSD (escort Mk 2...
