Re: Engine getting going 1 cyclinder at a time

Also try spraying WD40 over the dizzy cap and HT leads prior to starting it on a cold, damp morning.

It sounds like the HT is arcing somewhere; lift the bonnet with the engine running on a damp, dark evening and see if there's any stray arcing going on.

Re: Storage suggestions for my Traveller

It's advisable to do an engine oil & filter change, to prevent possible engine damage via acids in the old engine oil - same goes for gearbox and back axle. Also, disconnect the battery completely, and either charge it every month or so, or use a solar/trickle charger. Either pump the tyres up a...

Re: Pretentious Experts

Indeed, as long as the car is structurally sound and useable, it doesn't really matter that much what the repairs look like, particularly underneath where they are generally unseen. Ideally, the correct shaped repair panels should be used, however, for some cars these simply aren't available or are ...

Re: 1971 Traveller Hesitating

my only other problem is that there is a leak near on the bottom of the transmission where there is a small hole that nothing is in but a wire ill post a pic later You can buy a proper oil seal to replace the standard scroll type, though they are rather expensive for what they are: http://www.jlhmo...

Re: 1971 Traveller Hesitating

Good to hear that. :) The gearbox has a spring/rattle clip in that drain hole, which aids drainage of any oil from the bellhousing (usually from the crankshaft scroll oil seal); nothing to worry about as long as it's not excessive.

Video clip can't be seen as it's set to 'private'.

Re: 1971 Traveller Hesitating

Here's my 1275cc MG Midget engine (also with HIF carb); as you can see, the number 1 spark plug HT terminal is the one on the far right of the dizzy, but bear in mind mine has Accuspark electronic ignition so I had to rotate the dizzy to alter the timing accordingly. IIRC, the #1 spark plug HT termi...

Re: 1971 Traveller Hesitating

I would try spraying some carb/brake cleaner down the carb intake while cranking the engine over, to see if it will start.

If not, do a compression test; all four cylinders should give at least 150psi, and be roughly equal.

Which engine do you have - the standard 1098cc?

Re: 1971 Traveller Hesitating

Check that the SU carb dashpot is properly topped up with engine oil or similar. Also try spraying WD40 around the inlet manifold gasket with the engine idling; if it briefly raises the idle speed, you have a gasket leak. And ensure that the mixture is correct; the spark plug tips should be a light ...

Re: MG Midget Alloy Wheels

I used to have a set of 13" ex-Midget minilites on my Traveller:

Sadly, one got damaged in an accident, so I sold the remaining three and went over to LP917 van wheels instead.

Re: Spax struggles

I'm not so sure that the Mini is that much lighter than a Minor at the front; after all, in the Mini, the heavy gearbox & diff is attached to the underside of the engine, whereas in the Minor, it is of course in the middle of the car. It would be interesting to get both cars' front ends on a wei...

Re: Traveller rear lamp rubber flanges

I usually insert the chrome ring in as far as it will go, and use a small flat-bladed screwdriver to gently ease the remaining rubber lip over it, working it around while you apply pressure on the chrome ring.

Mind you, mine are the original 43 year old items, and the rubber is pretty soft.

Don't use the kit with the plastic pipe. You , like me and many others, will regret fitting it. They sweat brake fluid and are not fit for purpose. Not very good for your paintwork.
I thought it was just mine that did that!  Good to hear that it's a recognized problem.

Re: Spax struggles

I was under the impression that the Spax dampers were gas- and not oil-filled. :-? I fitted a cheap set of Mr Grumpy's telescopics to my Traveller in the early 1990s, which used Gabriel (US-made) units. The rears are still on there and doing fine, though I had to replace the fronts after one got dam...

Re: Seat Belts

I think seatbelt mountings were fitted to all the 1962-on (Series V) Minors. AFAIK, the front seatbelts are mandatory (required for the MOT) if the mountings are fitted, but you don't have to have rear ones, unless, of course, you want to.

Re: A bad reputation created by some 'modern' car drivers ?

I saw a 4x4 (Japanese, I think) that had somehow had its roof and windscreen caved in, coming out of sleepy Herne Bay in Kent the other night; I'm guessing the driver must have gone around the S-bends there a bit too fast and rolled it. There were a couple of police vans present, but I didn't...

Re: Respray / engine overhaul

I fitted one of those cheap 45D4 dizzys to my 1275cc MG Midget engine while I overhauled the original 25D4. I didn't notice much, if any, difference in the overall performance.

I did wonder what you meant by "Eke trucks", and was about to go and look it up!

Re: Respray / engine overhaul

Perhaps the little lead inside is frayed and earthing against the dizzy body? You could fit a replacement new 45D4 dizzy available cheaply on E-bay. They are 'universal' fitment and suit most A-series engines: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Morris-Minor-Brand-new-replacement-45d4-Distributor-/18059256575...
