Re: Novel problem - engine dies during engine braking - any assistance welcomed

>>The trouble with the manifold gasket is that over time it dries out and then crumbles. To overcome this problem >>grease the gasket on both faces before fitting. >>The gasket will remain supple and if necessary can be reused. A good tip. I like to use copper grease where parts will run hot, I find...

Re: Novel problem - engine dies during engine braking - any assistance welcomed

Hi All Huzzah ! Found it ! The problem was at the inlet manifold to block gasket. Naturally the break was right underneath where it was near-impossible to inspect :( However I guess I shouldn't complain for 54 years of good hard gasket-ing work. A new gasket has restored normal ops. Now I have the j...

Re: Novel problem - engine dies during engine braking - any assistance welcomed

Hi All Thanks muchly for your suggestions. >>The fact that it recovers with choke suggests that the mixture could be a bit lean, >>so check for air leaks at the manifold. If you had not already >>chnaged the carb then I would look at the jet, but you have eliminated that by the swap. I do run it lea...

Novel problem - engine dies during engine braking - any assistance welcomed

Hi Group My poor old moggie has never shown anything like this problem before. This one has me beat ! The symptom is that the engine pulls strongly for part to full throttle but seems to misfire at low throttle and during engine braking. When the clutch is fully disengaged the engine splutters and m...

Need to borrow a rear hub nut spanner?

Hi clubbies I have recently overhauled my Moggie 1000's rear hubs and I bought the proper spanner to do it with. A wise decision, those nuts were on TIGHT ! If you are in urgent need of doing the same - and are within a sensible travelling distance of Marlborough, Wiltshire - the spanner is now sitt...

Its time for a recon gearbox

Hi All
I can't put it off any longer - I need a recon gearbox for my 1098 Minor. Has anyone any recommendations for picking a good supplier? Have you any horror or good news stories?
Cheers, Marty

Ta for K&N comments

Thanks for the comments ! I'm don't want to alter my Minor too much (and am on a budget anyway), so I've decided to fit the K&N, take the breather down to the road (the old engine leaks a bit of oil anyway, a bit more won't hurt) and give it a try for a while. I'll go as far as changing the carb...

Ideally you want the later PCV system. ..... The later PCV system has a large collection tube welded to the pipe that comes out of the front tappet cover. I think ESM might do them. They also do snazzy alloy rocker covers, very smart. Ta for that. Can you tell me what 'PCV' is please ? I've not com...

Rocker breather pipe with K&N air filter

I've got hold of a K&N air filter for my SU 1 1/4" SU, very nice it is too ! The problem is, can't find out the best way to deal with rocker cover breather which pipes into the standard air filter box - theres no provision for it on a K&N. Some people say just direct it down to floor - ...
