Car Tracker

Hey folks My Moggy is an utterly precious family heirloom that I have the good fortune to have inherited. It is my cherished daily driver and I love it to bits. I am constantly paranoid about it being stolen, particularly as I have recently moved to a less than pleasant area as I can't afford to liv...

Re: Weird carb trouble

Its an HS2. I think I have found the source of the trouble. For a start, I hadn't set the fast idle correctly. I thought I had, but I was mistaken. Turns out I had given it insufficient adjustment, so that when the choke is out the throttle is still closed. No wonder it ran badly when the choke was ...

Re: Weird carb trouble

Hey folks; thanks for the ideas So far, I've: Checked the dashpot oil. Seems fine. Checked that the piston hits the bridge cleanly. Seems fine; gives a nice metallic clunk whether the jet is lowered or fully up. Fast idle screw seems to be clear of the choke cam. Indeed the fast idle seems to work o...

Weird carb trouble

Hey there folks Need to pick your brains; the jet on my Moggy's carb was leaking so I swapped it for a nice new replacement from a carb service kit. It now doesnt leak, and everything seems ok in that department. Problem is, I can't seem to get the damn thing running well. Having put the carb back o...

Re: How many?

27000 still on the road is a good healthy figure. I am glad to hear that.

I hope that this number really has stabilised and that the number on the road, whatever their condition, remains constant enough to ensure the continuation of the parts supply into the future.

Re: How many?

You've all missed the point a bit. What I was asking is if anyone knows how many rusty Minors are scrapped every year in comparison with how many are put back on the road.

How many?

Parked next to this lovely, but rather sad looking Minor this morning (one on the right). It was in poor nick; gouty gutters, loads of bad filler all over, rotten wings and dull, faded paint. It made me rather sad, and got me thinking. Just how many Minors like this are scrapped every year, and how ...

With the new head the compression ratio is more sensible- 9.5-10:1 We only used the previous head because at the time it was all we had! The engine is a 1098 midget engine (10CC engine number). It is quite mild. The current head casting is a 12G295, which has been skimmed for 25cc combustion chamber...

Endless head gasket failure

So my engine has munched four head gaskets in five months. The engine suffered a spate of pinking, caused by the installation of a new electronic ignition system that allowed too much ignition advance. This was deemed to be the cause of the first gasket failure. Since the failure coincided with this...

Hobby with day job connotations. I forge useful little tools, uensils and pretty things, and sell them through a few local concerns. It is SUPERB fun. I love it. Many thanks, Matt. EN47 is an oil quenching, high chromium spring steel. Probably a bit brittle for most tools, but at least I know what I...

Weird question

Does anyone have an inkling as to what EXACT grade of steel was used in the leaf springs used in the Minor from the factory? Besides owning a moggy, I am also a blacksmith, and I have a mind to recycle some knackered minor leaf springs and forge them into chisels, sets, axe heads, scrapers, knives a...

This is all academic now it seems. A compression test revealed that the existing head gasket is gone between 3 and 4.

Sod it, I'll whip it apart, shim it up and try again.

Thanks for chipping in though, guys.

The compression is at least 11.5:1, maybe even 12:1. I'd rather not use another head as this one is a beauty. Plus its the only 12G295 head I own, and the cam I have is to high lift to go for a 12G940 head without the valves hitting the block. Maybe I could try to source another 295 head, but I coul...

Can't stop the engine pinking!

I am running a 1098cc midget motor in my moggy, which was fitted with stupidly high compression pistons when rebuilt years ago. When my last engine wore out I put this one in, but had to use the only cylinder head I had in stock, which had the hell skimmed out of it. Naturally, this means I can't st...

Thing is, if they worked on proximity detection, every time the boy racer behind you got close enough to your rear bumper, the whole car would turn into a popcorn ball!

Nice one. I plan to fit a cortina anti roll bar to my own moggy someday, since I have the mounting points already installed, and a rollbar in the shed. I just need some spare cash for the extra insurance costs.
