Yes, burned out valves could be the source of poor compression. I once took a head off to discover that there was a large slice missing from an exhast valve! I'm not sure about the rough running though. I guess the uneven compressions won't help, but I'm not sure that they're bad enough to cause sev...

The chances are, if the damper is that low on oil, then it'll need replacing anyway. Though it might just be that is hasn't been topped up for a while. When you top up, take it for a short drive then check for leaks - or as I found, a puddle of oil on the tie plate :-(. IIRC they're only about £15 e...

When I say pattern, I mean a new one from BM, but it's advertised at pattern. Thanks for the tip about vaseline etc. The engine will probably be rebuilt rather slowly and may be sitting around for a while before it gets back into the car. I don't think I'm going to replace the cam at the mo. It's go...

I thought the 1098 camshaft was pretty good? What would you put in instead, I'm not really looking for any performance improvement, my brothers saloon always went much better than my traveller. I haven't got a new pump, just the pattern one that doesn't fit. The engine's been in my parent's conserva...

Pump drive is standard for Morris (pin? - can't remember).

Never played with minis much, in fact never played with much at all other than Moggies, oh and my brothers Mk1 Fiesta (RIP).

I'll take a file (or angle grinder - he, he) to the pump.

Thanks

Pattern Oil Pump

Has anyone else had issues with these?

My brother bought one a while ago which fits the block a treat, but the back plate won't go.

It came from a reputable supplier too, so I was a little surprised.

RE: Oil pump cover

Thanks all, yes Nikki, the little round cover thing. The Manual suggests that a faulty joint can cause oil to leak into the clutch housing (which was where this all started), so I don't think it is purely cosmetic. I might try some gasket sealant, but I'd rather be safe than sorry, I don't fancy hav...

Oil pump cover

After finally getting around to stripping Mark's engine to find the oil leak (see post about slipping clutch from months and months ago), we placed the back plate on the ground and the oil pump cover just popped out. I understand from the BL workshop manual that this cover should be soldered to the ...

I have to agree. Concours minors are a joy to look at and as Ray says, an excellent reference point. I'd love to have the time and expertise to show a concourse car, but at the moment am struggling to just keep mine on the road - and in my opinion, on the road is where they belong. I love driving my...

Cam, are you sure it's the same as the tappet adjuster nut? I hunted for one for ages, everyone told me they were 1/4" BSF including several MM parts suppliers, but they're not. The closest I found was a 7mm, but that wouldn't thread poperly (I wonder why). One of the tappet adjusters on the pi...

Alec, Mark (my brother) is constantly adjusting his clutch pedal free play because the lock nut doesn't lock, so I don't think that is the problem. Willie, thanks for the explanation. I'd read the Haynes manuals and they really didn't explain much, at least not without having a dismantled engine in ...

Clutch slip when warm

Hello, my brother is complaining of clutch slip, to the extent that he struggled to get up our road (it's pretty steep) after a drive back from Cardiff. I took the car out this morning and it seemed fine, it pulled up the drive with no problems. I tried letting the clutch up in gear with the handbra...

The fan motor, like the starter motor, always turns the same way, regardless of wiring. I think they have field coils rather than permanent magnets, so when you reverse the current, you're also reversing the magnetic field and the motor spins in the same direction. I know we're pretty well past that...

Willie: No I haven't got them out yet, I ran out of time before the MOT booking, so greased them well and put it back together. Unfortunately, stopping off on the way to the MOT I noticed the ftong N/S damper was leaking (where the arm enters the body), so I cancelled the MOT and took the car home. ...

Replacement bearings purchased, have yet to fit them though. Figured I'd just file a flat in the old race so the puller has something to grip to. The screwdrivers lined up the holes OK, but as soon as the bolt went part way through, everything sprung back out of line. In the end, I slackened off all...

Propshaft UJ replacement

OK, one last post before this car gets back on the road... I've managed to get 2 of the spring clips that hold the UJ bearings out, but the other two have just snapped, leaving half a clip stuck in the casing. The two that are out are opposite, but I still couldn't seem to tap the UJ far enough accr...

Yeah, the stub axle is new, so I'm not going to risk damaging it, but heat might help. I'd rather not replace the bearings at the moment as they're still in good nick, assuming pulling the races apart hasn't wrecked them - the balls still all look OK, so here's hoping... Ray, I spent much time yeste...

Wishbone Tiebar replacement

How do you get the hole in the tie-bar to align with the one in the bracket on the wishbone? If I remove the (apparently necessary) thick square washer it goes together nicely, but with the spacer in place, I can't seem to get them to fit! Any suggestions? Also, when the inner bearing ineer race sti...
