Rear Axle Issues
I had oil leaks from both rear seals so I fitted new ones (early MM style rear axle). After only a few hundred miles the LH side has started weeping a little again. I was wondering about the collars on the axle - these seem to turn independently of the shaft on the RH side, but on the LH side the co...

Thank you. Yes, this is an MM style rear axle. I will pull drums off again and check.

Re: Rear Brakes
Yes I wondered about the beehives. None on the shoes when I removed the old ones. I know they're a pain to fit. Main thing I want to know is if I have the shoes on the right way round.

Rear Brakes
Just re did the rear brakes after leaking seals got oil all over them. Have also replaced the seals. Once all together the shoes are catching every couple of turns and moving the wheel cylinder in it's slot. The wheel cylinder kind of "floats" in the slot, nothing holding it tight. As I tu...

Re: Rear Axle seals - MM Type
Thanks Declan
But where's the rest of the shaft?? Is there a hole on the bench?? Bit confused
I might just end up taking the shafts to a local garage and getting them to replace the bearings with a press.
Cheers

Re: Rear Axle seals - MM Type
Thanks so much Declan. Appreciate the help
Sounds like getting the bearing off the half shaft is quite difficult. I may just leave the ones on there. I'm not aware of any noise from them

Rear Axle seals - MM Type
Both my rear oil seals have been leaking so will need replacing. May as well do the bearings while I'm at it. I have the early type MM split Case rear axle. Any tips on removing the half shafts and bearings? Manual recommends a special tool, what should I use? Slide Hammer? also, how to remove the s...

Re: Front Wheel Bearings
Thank you. But are you sure the MM style hubs use a thrust bearing? The ones I took out are the same on both sides. They don't have a thin outer race one side and a thick one on the other. They are both thick.

Front Wheel Bearings
I'm having trouble with front wheel bearings. After chewing through a couple of sets from ESM i tried some high quality sealed bearings but after only 3,000 miles the right hand ones have already started to rumble. Does anyone have any tips on fitting bearings in the MM style hubs? Does it matter wh...

Re: Front Wheel Bearings
Yes, wondering if the bearings are shifting in the hub. But they are in pretty tight and were fine for the first few thousand miles. If they were going to move in the hub I'd assume they'd start doing it pretty much straight away? The last set were high quality sealed units supposedly guaranteed for...

Front Wheel Bearings
Need some suggestions for front wheel bearings that will last more than a few thousand miles. I have MM style combined front hub/brake drums. After going through several sets of bearings from ESM Spares I tried some high quality KSM sealed bearings (both inner and outer). Now these are starting to g...

Core Plugs
Two of my core plugs have suddenly begun to leak. Any clues on replacing them? From memory you hit one side to swing them around then pull them out with pliers. I've been told brass ones are preferred - does anyone know where to get these? ESM have only mild steel ones. And they are in a set of four...

Re: Strange noise
Thanks. It wasn't like a clutch slipping. I've head that happen on a number of cars. It was a loud "whizzing" noise and was accompanied by vibration and engine revs. It sounded like the gearbox was destroying itself. But as I say all seems good now, so maybe it was a glazed clutch facing a...

Strange noise
On a drive today, just after coming round a roundabout, I suddenly got a loud "whizzing" noise and vibration from the clutch area. Immediately pulled over and the engine died. Started again first pull and after test moving through all the gears with no problem I headed home with absolutely...

Re: Poor brakes
An 803 doesn't need discs! My Series II 803 has all original drums and she stops beautifully, firm and secure. In my experience when people complain about the effectiveness of drum brakes it's usually due to worn components or bad adjustment. Wheel cylinders get sticky, drums get out of round and th...

Re: front wheel bearings
I had no end of trouble with front wheel bearings (mine has the MM style combined hub/brake drums). After going through three sets of supposedly correct bearings from ESM I went out and bought SKF sealed bearings from a bearing specialist. Not only are they far less messy and will not require re pac...

Re: Brakes pulling to right
Ahhh yes of course that makes sense. Like hydraulic lifters in an engine. Thanks. My Morrie pulls up beautifully but I have a strange problem on one of my other cars which has the single cylinder at the top. When cold the brakes are perfect, smooth and firm and pull up evenly. Once I've driven for a...

Re: Brakes pulling to right
But if one set of shoes is, say, 1/8" further from it's drum than the other does not the closer set hit it's drum first, which would cause the car to pull? adjusting the shoes the way I suggested certainly cured my problem.
