Re: 1098 compression test figures

Thanks for all the replies and it's god to know that I've followed the appropriate procedure (I know everyone has slightly different methods). First of all you say it's running a bit rich. So check the timing first of all and the state of the points, HT leads , plugs, etc. Are the valve clearances OK...

1098 compression test figures

Good evening all. I need clarification as I'm questioning my methods and results. Comp test done on my 1098 with a low mileage crank. Engine hot, all plugs out, throttle wide open and getting 170psi on all four cylinders (give or take 1 or 2 psi). Hoping this is the correct method? I'm getting a bit...

Re: rear crank leak/crankcase pressure/closed breathing

So after fitting my own version of the later crancase breather/oil separator and plumbing it into the carb body, it currently is not leaking! Granted I haven't had an opportunity for a long run but did around 25 miles with no obvious drop in oil level. The pressure is a steady 60 (ish) wiht good vac...

Re: rear crank leak/crankcase pressure/closed breathing

IslipMinor, just a thought. Is there a difference, gain or loss, with the size of the tube coming from the tappet crancase vent into the oil separator? I've noticed on the Mini version it seems to be quite a large diameter tube (at least 1") then around a 1/2" outlet into the carb. The cur...

Re: rear crank leak/crankcase pressure/closed breathing

A PCV valve is used in conjunction with an inlet manifold port to reduce the level of vacuum in the crankcase. The port on the SU is already at a low vacuum, so no need for a PCV valve as well. The system you are proposing should work well, and is the same as the closed circuit arrangements used on...

Thanks Phil. Did your setup include the use of an inline PCV valve ? I'm wondering if there's an advantage by using one over not? Thanks

rear crank leak/crankcase pressure/closed breathing

Wow its been a long time since last posting here (although I have been using the FB MMO page regularly) Warning: this may be a long post so get a brew on ready! This topic has more than likely been discussed at great length but I feel some clarification is needed. A quick background on my engine. It...

Brake bleeding problems

Good afternoon everyone, hopefully someone can offer some advise on what I'm doing wrong. Trying to bleed the brakes on a '71 Converted Saloon without much luck. Following the Haynes idea of moving round the car starting at nearside front and ending offside front. Done this at least 4 times and the ...

Possible dizzy noise...or could be the water pump. Help

It seems there is one thing after another at the moment but every problem fixed is one step closer to a healthy car I suppose. There is a distinct noise that gets faster with the engine revs, almost sounds like a worn/dry bearing. I can hear it when I'm in the car so I guess it must be fairly loud. ...

Re: hs4 carb needle problems

Just to close this thread, I've used that Mintylamb site and it came back with the AAU being a good all rounder. I've fitted one and it does indeed run a lot better, not quite 100% but no flat spot on acceleration and the plugs are a good light brown, not jet black as before. Thanks for everyone's i...

Should have said, the float bowl is vertical yes with no sign of fuel overflow around the breather.

Re: hs4 carb needle problems

Ok so a few point there to get me going. Slightly unsure needle wise, the AAB doesn't have any info attached however something like the AAU is rated for stage one use in a 998 mini, whatever that meens? I've got some 2in1 oil in the dashpot which I've used in several other carbs with good reults, no...

hs4 carb needle problems

So bare with me. I'm running an HS4 on my 1098 that came with an AAC swing needle installed which supposedly is the stock needle for a 998 Mini. It starts and idles fine but there is a definate 'flat spot' on acceleration and hesitation on cold mornings which I think I'm right in saying means it's r...

Re: loud knocking under load, 1098cc

Did the valves last night with the help of a legendary gentleman. Because I didn't note the order of the pushrods that obviously threw out the valve gaps. Fired up first time after setting them! Drove to work this morning (only 3 miles or so) and he sounded fine. I'll check the head and re-torque. I...

Re: loud knocking under load, 1098cc

Can you install the head gasket wrong, this is the only thing I can think of. The one I've used is copper but it didn't have any markings to say top/front etc so I just made sure it fit over the studs.

Re: loud knocking under load, 1098cc

Sooo, replaced the head gasket as per the Haynes, everything torqued correctly...struggled to fire up then sounded like it was running on 2 cylinders before it died! Not really sure where to start looking? Everything was removed and replaced correctly as far as I know, didn't touch the dizzy but cou...

Re: missfire at high rpm

Finally managed to track down the source of the misfire! Replaced the coil, leads, went back to points, checked timing....nothing. Put everything back on as this made no difference. Turned out to be the +ve wire going to the coil was loose in its crimp connector and finally fell out resulting in no ...

Re: missfire at high rpm

Thanks for the quick reply guys :D . Should have mentioned that it has an electronic ignition kit fitted. It does seem like it could be fuel starvation but it seems odd that it has just changed from running fine all through the rev range to now struggling at higher rpm's.
