Re: SIDE VALVE - STICKY EXHAUST VALVE

Thanks both for your responses. They are consistent with what other people have told me, which is basically 'don't panic' and just take it easy. I have been advised that using an artist's brush to paint some Wynns Super Charge onto the upper stems of the valves has proved effective too, doing this s...

SIDE VALVE - STICKY EXHAUST VALVE

I have recently rebuilt my side valve MM engine. It's been running so sweetly since getting it fired up and I couldn't have been happier. However, yesterday, the engine all of a sudden started misfiring when pulling away from a roundabout. A quick roadside test and some spark plug changes ascertaine...

Re: Series MM side valve oil pumps

Oh yes - I see what you mean - having referred back to the diagram I can see the difference now! Interestingly, the engine this pump came from was a USHM3 with external oil filter - so it would have had the filter and the gauze inside the pump for filtration. It’s strange that it doesn’t seem to hav...

Series MM side valve oil pumps

Is an oil pump from a USHM3 engine suitable for fitting in a USHM2 engine? The oil pump I have is from the USHM3 engine (which used to be in my car) and apart from the shape of the hood I cannot discern any difference between them (based on the diagrams in the workshop manual). The oil pump I have g...

Side valve engine: extraction of distributor drive dowel

Hi, I am rebuilding my USHM2 engine and am approaching the point where I need to remove the camshaft. In order to do this, the distributor drive dowel needs to be extracted. Is anyone able to advise the specific bolt/screw I need in order to do this? The manual advises that this is 5mm but I am unsu...

Re: Side-valve rebuild - mounting on engine stand

Mick, Thank you very much for your response - it is incredibly helpful. I think that I have all of the tools needed though hadn't considered that a smaller valve spring compressor and piston ring compressor would be needed. Re the removal of the pistons and purely out of interest for when I do it - ...

Re: Side-valve rebuild - mounting on engine stand

Thanks everyone for your responses and apologies for the delay in getting back. I am flabbergasted that some of the bolts are metric! Mick - I would be very interested to know if there are any specific tips or advice you have pertaining to the dismantling and rebuilding of this engine, and also whet...

Side-valve rebuild - mounting on engine stand

I am planning to undertake a rebuild of my side-valve engine this summer and would like to mount it on an engine stand. When I have rebuilt A-Series engines, the bolts I have used have screwed into the block where the backplate attaches, and I assume that it would be the same with the side-valve. If...

Glove compartment screws for late Minor 1000

In the process of disassembly I have unfortunately mislaid the two set screws which screw the driver's side glove compartment surround to the dashboard (see photo). Please could someone advise the screws I need to get hold of? I have checked suppliers and they do not seem to be listed. Glovebox.png ...

Re: Drive shaft oil seals

Thank you both for your opinions. Given that the car has been standing with little use and I’m going to have to take things apart whatever the cause, I think that I’ll replace everything - oil seals, gaskets and ‘O’ rings. Fingers crossed I’ll have better luck now the car is going to be in more regu...

Drive shaft oil seals

Hello, Advice please - my car has been off the road for a year or two and I took it out for a drive yesterday. There’s a strong smell of gear oil coming from the nearside rear drum and so I think it’s safe to assume that the driveshaft has leaked oil into the drum. This is not the first time this ha...

Thanks everyone for the tips/advice - I think the first thing I will do is inject some oil down there, but failing that I may go for the Mini upgrade!

Steering column felt bushes

I'd like to replace the upper and lower felt bushes which on the steering column. Having looked at the manual, there are not specific instructions for replacing these, so I would appreciate any advice. I'm assuming that the general procedure is remove steering wheel, remove indicator switch (is this...

LH top trunnions

There seems to be a universal shortage of LH top trunnion kits at the moment - every supplier seems to be out of stock! Does anyone know why? Perhaps more importantly for me, does anyone know of a supplier where there are some in stock? I'm trying to recommission my car for Minors on Tour and would ...

Brake light switch - bypass (?)

I wish I had kept the relevant edition of Minor Matters, but a year or so ago there was an excellent article in Technical Tips which detailed a simple way of overcoming the problem of the standard equipment brake light switch from failing prematurely (which newly manufactured ones apparently do). Fr...
