I'm a little late to the conversation, but I used POR15 Austin-Healey green. This stuff won't even scorch with a propane torch. I tried.

Well, that answers that. The backplate is the original that came with the 948 car. I can safely assume that a 1098 backplate would move things even further away, leaving even less room for release fork travel.

a. I don't know which backplate I have. Doesn't seem overly thin to me.
b. With the 948 release arm, the bearing was not centered on the pressure plate. Wrong geometry.

Here is a photo. This is taken with a LHD 1098 gearbox, fork and release bearing, and 948 flywheel and clutch and pressure plate. Everything lines up well enough, but there is very little room left for release fork travel. The clutch did not release properly for me with this setup. Since the 1098 pr...

Well, pulled out the motor last night, and this is what I've come up with. There is no combination of 1098/948 clutch parts that will work well. Using a 948 clutch and pressure plate leaves the release bearing too far away from the pressure plate, no matter which fork you use. You have to use the 10...

Why can't you just drill out the broken bolts and re-tap the threads?

I have both a 948 and a 1098 flywheel readily available.
I just needed to know what parts cross between MG/Austin/Morris clutch and gearboxes so I can save some $$$!

(There needs to be a sticky thread on the parts needed for a 948 to 1098 gearbox swap!)

Right. I'm still converting my '60 minor 948 over to the 1098 gearbox. All I need is a 1098 clutch and pressure plate.
I thought the Sprite plate I linked to looked identical to the one listed on ESM.

So, the engine/gearboxes are the same, but the clutch is smaller on a Sprite?

Could somebody please confirm this as a 1098 pressure plate?
I need to make sure this will fit my Minor.

If it helps sprite and midgets use the same gearboxes... and I know there are a few spridgets in the states. Try asking on www.spritespot.com forums OK, this is the info I needed! I had no idea they had interchanging parts. I'm new to British cars completely. Like I said before, I fix Japanese cars...

Yes, The car is LHD.
I am in Sioux City, Iowa. There aren't even any MGs here. ;)
I would love to find a good gearbox of any variety, if I can pay someone to ship it to me. If all else fails, I'll order a gearbox from somewhere. I'd just like to save some money.

Should be able to pick up another 948 box very cheaply - most upgrade to the much better 1098 box at first sign of trouble. My biggest problem is being in the USA. These cars are pretty rare over here. Can somebody help me find parts or a used gearbox? Shipping is a big factor, but I am willing to ...

Well, the first gear has a missing tooth. Of course, I can't seem to find one online. Does anybody know where I can find one? (948 gearbox)
Image
The transmission absolutely has a problem. It has to come apart.

If it's been banging for a while - the laygear may have been damaged, so another gearbox may be the way to go. It would be unwise to buy any parts until you see the state of the gears in your box. It is possible to remove the side cover (watch out for 2 small springs) with the box in the car - and ...

I agree. Out comes the gearbox. I'll just fix it myself. It looks like I can get the gear from ESM reasonably.

It was definitely gear oil that came out. It was very clean. It was an extremely small amount, not even enough to cover the bottom of my drain pan. :(

Well, I drained the gearbox. I only got out maybe 20 tablespoons worth of gear oil. :( No metal in the oil. I took off the cover, and everything was clean, and I couldn't see any obvious damage. I guess I'm going to have to have the gearbox gone through at the local transmission shop. Or replace it,...
