Yup, and probably another million or so other problems will blame it as well!

Not sure what is happening to posts, but I have just posted and it has gone in with a time stamp of 17.47 yesterday - I started looking at it then, but only actually posted a few minutes ago.

Re: Speedometer ser.no. coding?
Now, if my team were in the Premiership My younger son is the only known Owls supporter in Oxford! We lived in Sheffield in the 1980's and at that time Wednesday and Man U were in the same division, so we would go over to Old Trafford every season to watch the Owls/Man U match. One year they beat M...

Re: Strip down - rust?
The areas needing attention look very typical for a Minor, and generally very similar to what we found when stripping our Minor back in 1992. The biggest surprise was the state of the inner sills, once we had removed the cover plates - for the MOT the outside had been repaired, not the inside. We di...

Re: replacing engine steady bar
The 'other' cars have hydraulic clutch operation, so any movement of the engine/gearbox during the drive take-up has no effect on the clutch operation. The Minor's mechanical linkage must stay in the same place during the clutch operation, otherwise the take-up can be intermittent and juddery. Anyon...

Mike,
Don't forget that the LH/passenger/nearside hub nut has a left-hand thread, so turn clockwise to UNDO!!

Re: Car insurance when you die
Joint Car Insurance - certainly from 1968 to the end of the 70's we had a 'proper' joint insurance policy with Guardian Royal Exchange for the 2 cars that we owned at the time (i.e. the Minor and ANO various). Eventually we couldn't get it anymore with GRE, so went to 'normal' policies with each oth...

Re: Original carpets - gearbox oil grommet/bung
Phil, Oops, definitely the memory playing tricks. Yes it is hexagon headed - I removed our A-Series gearbox in 1992 and replaced it with the Toyota T50 5-spd in 1998, and did not check before posting the original comment. Web Editor: Pity I can't edit the previous post to correct the error. I unders...

Re: Thread sizes
The thread in the diff casing is a parallel thread, so you could run a 1/2" BSPP tap through it, but if the tapered plug already goes in up to about halfway, that is actually what it should do. The plug can be sealed with some PTFE tape wrapped around the plug threads, before screwing it into t...

Re: Gearbox noise (with video)
Presumably when knocking it into neutral, the engine revs drop to idle? From everything that you have said the noise is engine speed related, so if the revs drop the noise stops?? Have you tried driving beyond the initial onset of the noise in each gear? What happens if just slowly increase the engi...

Re: Original carpets - gearbox oil grommet/bung
Our is a 1958 car, and it definitely had a hole in the original carpet, so that the gearbox oil level could be checked by simply removing the grommet to access the square headed plug on the side of the gearbox.

Re: Master Brake Cylinder
If the rear brake pipe has been re-routed to the front, has a servo been fitted? If so, to get it to work on all four wheels, the rear pipe has to be re-routed to a front t-piece, connected to the servo outlet, and then routed back to the rear axle.

Re: Ignition Type?
Don't forget that the Minor was originally positive earth. The Accuspark 1a diagram assumes negative earth, so the car will need to be changed to negative first, before changing the ignition system. Probably a good idea anyway, as the owner can fit an alternator, radio etc. with less bother than +ve...

Re: Gearbox noise (with video)
Picking up the thought on the fan, and before doing anything else, is it cracked or anything like that? The in-gear speeds all relate to same engine speed, 3,300/3,400 rpm. If the gearbox is in neutral, and the engine speed increased to the same speed does the noise occur? If it does, remove the fan...

Re: Recognising inlet valves
Like Phil, the cam (Calver RC13-OT) I have recently fitted needs 0.016" clearance for standard rockers, so 0.019" for 1.5:1 ratio rockers. The previous cam was a Piper 270 that had 0.012" for standard rockers, and 0.016" for 1.5. In addition I set exhausts to 0.019", so was ...

Where is the course being held? I bought a TIG welder a little while ago, and have been trying to find a part-time TIG welding course somewhere near(ish) to Oxford, but no luck so far.

Re: High top radiator brass drain tap
ESM and Charles Ware both list a radiator drain tap for 'original radiators'. It looks very like the one fitted to our radiator, which is 'original' as far as I know - it certainly has not been replaced since 1965! The only difference is that ours has a short tube extension outlet, and we have a pla...

Re: Insurance - Are there any really specialist brokers?
We are with Norton Heritage Classic Car Insurance, and have been since the Minor was restored in 1998. They are very easy to talk to, with very little queuing or be constantly assured that we are 'important' - usually get straight through to their Birmingham office with minimal delay. The only claim...

Re: Different reading on battery condition gague
LED Bulbs? I changed all the speedo bulbs to LED a while ago, and immediately found that the alternator needed a good blip of throttle (~2,000rpm) to get it charging. Normally I don't bother to do it on initial start, just wait until the car gets moving and the alternator kicks in quite quickly, and...

Re: Metal thickness
As a more general comment on Minor panel replacement, I did not try to replicate the original spot welding with either spot welding again or plug welding. After tacking, checking, checking and checking, all the joints were 'double seam' welded throughout the bodyshell. After some dressing with the a...
