Never heard of that one, which rule book is it from?

Didn't cars in the 20s and 30s sometimes use reverse to get up steep hills?

The shock absorbing springs built into the clutch friction plate can rattle but I doubt you would be able to hear the sound while the engine is running.
Have you narrowed down the location of the noise with a mechanics stethoscope (a long screwdriver ) ?

You need to look at the inside where the filler is to get an idea of what you are dealing with, it looks fairly OK from the picture. I was expecting lumps of filler attached to newspaper or chicken wire from the title of this post

Sounds like a duff plug which you have diagnosed and cured.
Water from the exhaust is normal.
Black smoke is from rich mixture, blue from buring oil.

There are plans to build another tunnel nearby and to put a toll on the Blackwall tunnel to pay for it!
They are of course having a "consultation" about it, we know what that means

TEL. It states it is a clear viscous fluid. If this is true then the red gunk should not be TEL

It may be clear when made in a lab, I expect at some time a previous owner used Redex upper cylinder lube in this car and the red colour is from its residue in the tank.
