Re: Engine

What is the history of your Minor? Was it working fine last week or has it been sitting? The exhaust could be severely restricted. Loosen the exhaust clamp and see how it runs.

Re: Steering Columns and wheel fitting

We don't have as many Series V Minors over hear and I haven't worked on any but I think the self canceling turn signal with the light at the end of the stalk was the same tot he end of production. To be self canceling a short square head screw is threaded into a hole in the column. Other wise the co...

Re: Steering Columns and wheel fitting

The splines are the same but there are two very similar three spoke wheels, with and without the hole to secure the horn push.

Re: Hardening half-shafts

Bear in mind the when, how, where of when it breaks is only the last straw on the camels back. The interesting observation is whether RHD or LHD, overwhelmingly it's passenger side half shaft that breaks. Also I've learned that early Sprites had a very high frequency while the Nash Metropolitan with...

Re: Hardening half-shafts

I agree with you ManyMinors and different Minors with the same driver, some will and some won't. It's not driver style. I'm leaning towards a structural problem such as the differential is slightly clocked causing stress concentrations on the spline. But that doesn't explain why the passenger side t...

Re: Wow!

I've seen just select straps on one seat droop considerably more than the others. We don't know the condition of the passenger seat. Most likely someone has sat in the driver's seat to move the car, and the passenger seat can look fine from the top with loose straps if no one has sat in it. My obser...

Re: Wow!

The seat straps will age and just drop to the floor. He should have returned it, there's a dent in the fuel tank. I've never see a wheel with full paint on the inside. Bear in mind virtually every Minor I've touched was a Series III. Surely they were taking more short cuts in 68. Is that what the or...

Go for another ride with your GPS but this time check the odometer. It's direct drive so more accurate than a 50+ year old indirect speedo connection.

Later MG Midgets had reversing lights. The switch is in the remote shifter. Just exchange the remote shifter and run some wires.

Re: Oil filter housing leak.

It's typical for the gap between the side of the canister and the casting not to be uniform. Your tighten experience may be the issue. It doesn't take undue force to tighten them. Over tightening rubber seals can cause them to misbehave. As stated going to a spin on filter is the way to go.he

Re: handbrake cables.

geoberni, I understand the rear cylinder piston diameter was reduced at that time which reduces the force exerted on the rear brake shoes.

philthehill, got it. Modified Minor with change in weight distribution.

Re: SU Fuel Pump problem?

If the pump didn't slow down with the inlet blocked, there are still multiple areas that could cause an air leak. With the pump in hand and most of the fuel removed, blow into the into the outlet. There should be not air flow. Now remove the top valve disc and repeat the test to test the lower valve...

Re: handbrake cables.

I'm trying to put in perspective the need for Wolseley rear brakes to maintain balance with the Marina front disc. Considering that BMC felt the need to reduce the rear wheel cylinder diameter when the eight inch front brakes were introduced. Presumably this reduction was to prevent premature lockin...

Re: Fuel Pump Rapid Ticking

As Panky mentioned, the return to normal pumping while moving is indicative of vapourisation. A restriction would just be worse when the fuel demand increases. The fuel most likely is formulated for fuel injection systems.

Re: Fuel Pump Rapid Ticking

Try again when the car is cool such as first thing in the morning. If it is just fuel vapourisation, then all will be fine at those temps. Typically, vapourisation happens in the vertical run up to the pump. This is the point of lowest pressure, which is less than atmospheric. Whereas the fuel from ...

What aspect of the wheel do you not like? Marinas also used a hub insert rather than the cap, if that is the issue.

First, it most likely was a saloon by looking at the body above the windscreen. A lot of extensive bodywork and appears to be well done. However, it's always interesting to see what isn't done. Attention was put into strengthening by raising the door threshold but the door only has one hinge. Here w...

Re: Too high or too low

A quick evaluation is to stand back and project the bottom edge of the body towards the front wheel. It should be just a bit below center. Most likely one side will be much lower.

Make sure the vent on the fuel bowl is open. If it's closed, the bowl will become pressurized and push fuel into the carb.
