Re: Died on me, now iregular running

That sounds encouraging and fingers crossed, though I doubt the condensor and rotor arm both failed together. Assuming all is well on your longer run, I would be tempted to then put the old rotor back and see what happens - if the engine plays up again, then it was the rotor......if not, then it was...

Re: Died on me, now iregular running

If you are going to change the condensor, I agree with 'Biggles1957' that you should get a quality condensor, and suggest the 'Distributor Doctor' for that. Whilst I agree with 'oliver 90owner' that methodical tests are the best way, it is not always desirable to run an unreliable car in the hope th...

Re: Died on me, now iregular running

Sounds more like an ignition problem to me - failing coil, condensor, rotor, dizzy cap, poor/shorted connections etc. Normal procedure is to first test for a good spark at the king lead when cranking the engine, but it is always trickier to diagnose intermittent problems so alternately I suggest swa...

Re: Exhaust clamp leak causing starting problems?

Your coil is wired up correctly for +ive earth, as the current goes to earth via the points. But I would hope for more than 12.48v..............12.6 or a bit above would be better. The spark doesn't sound great either. Likely, although not only, culprit is the coil. As I mentioned, many modern coils...

Re: holes for semaphores

Hi Keith,
Those features don't help much as they were used even on the 1098 cars up until Oct 1964. The numbers you quote suggest mid-1962 to me, but that is at odds with having semaphores. Some pics might help.

Re: holes for semaphores

Assuming the car is original, there are various clues to look for. The first 1098 engine was fitted September 1962 so, if your 948 is the original engine, it predates that date. Other clues to look for are the type of seats, whether gloveboxes are fitted or not, the steering wheel and horn button. T...

Re: holes for semaphores

Semaphores were discontinued in August 1961 so, assuming the holes/slots are original, your car is a bit older than you think! 8)

Your understanding is correct. The rear windows are the same for 948 and 1098 models.

Re: Petrol Cap Seal

OK, thank you for your answers. I have only really noticed this problem recently and, like 'KeithL', stop filling once the pump handle clicks, so I don't think I am regularly over-filling the tank. Therefore, all I think I can do is fit the seal when it arrives and see what happens. The seals must b...

Petrol Cap Seal

Petrol has been seeping out from my petrol cap when going up steep hills with a full tank. I have ordered a new cork seal and intend to glue it in place with impact adhesive. Will that be OK - or should I do anything else to make sure it stays in place and creates a good seal?

Re: dome rubber / suspension.

Its quite simple. If you are sat behind the steering wheel looking out the front windscreen, your right is the car's RHS and your left is the car's LHS. 8)

Re: Exhaust clamp leak causing starting problems?

I agree with 'ManyMinors' that a leak at the exhaust/manifold joint shouldn't stop the car starting. It might well cause it to pop a bit on the overrun. But assuming everything is set up properly (timing, plug and points gaps, carb, coil connections etc.) the clue might be in your comment 'the coil'...

Re: Rust - Top of Battery Tray

I have used boiling water successfully and the simple answer is to remove the battery from the car first and do it outside. When its all clean and dry, clean up the battery clamps and vasoline over the battery poles as suggested by 'ManyMinors'...........

Re: What did Morris get wrong originally?

Yes, and, even though I own a lovely SII, I do think the one-piece screen looks better on a Minor, as the split-screen looks a bit 'fussy' on such a small car. But as I said, split-screens do bestow a certain period charm to the older models, even though they are prone to leaks..... :-?

For those who pay less attentio to servicing then the warning light could be useful, although such people probably wouldn't know what it meant Ha ha, that's funny! :D But you do have to wonder - many of these poor old cars were severely neglected back in the day when they were run as cheap old 'ban...

Re: What did Morris get wrong originally?

Well, there were plenty of British cars with single-piece windscreens in the 40's. Maybe the split-screen was just a carry-over from the American cars that influenced Issigonis' design? And the trafficators were actually discontinued in August 1961.

Re: unusual engine prefix

I think a 99 prefix denotes a 998cc engine. So, yes, I believe your engine was originally a 948cc.
For Minors, it is quite simple: 8 = 803cc, 9 = 948cc and 10 = 1098cc.
