Engine & Gearbox Removal

I know this subject has been done to death in the past, but I am still left unsure about certain aspects. I was going to fit my newly rebuilt engine and gearbox at a later date, but it seems now is the perfect time to do it while there are no organised events or runs to miss out on, it will allow me...

Re: Why is this rubbing the back of my wheel?

Unfortunately Declan does not have any stock of seals at the moment or for the foreseeable future, I have already been in touch this week.

Re: Why is this rubbing the back of my wheel?

Kennatt I am not disputing your experience of joint failure, but I always thought the bottom trunnion was the one that was under most pressure and likely to part company. The weight of the car is hanging on the bottom ones via the bottom arms and torsion bars. You must have been unlucky for a top on...

Re: Mg Midget 1275 gearbox rebuild

I just found a cheaper version of the special tool.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Classic-Mini ... 2749.l2649

My offer of £10 and free p&p was accepted, so well pleased.

Re: No spark

Myoldjalopy I suspect your are right about the timing comment. When I fitted an Accuspark, I had to turn the distributor a considerable amount anti clockwise from where it had been with the points setup. So if he has not moved it the timing is probably way out for the points now, and it will be very...

Re: Clutch Operating Lever Position

I have now fitted the 1275 clutch release bearing, and that being about 4mm deeper from pins to face gives a much better position for the lever, so I am happy that will work OK now. Everything is brand new and standard, so why the 1098 release bearing does not work very well is a mystery. Just to be...

Re: No spark

Richard The Accuspark unit could possibly fail, but they dont fail when not in use so I dont think that will be your problem. You recently asked some questions about the car misfiring, and it was a blown head gasket in the end, but it was actually running then. So I cannot help wondering if you have...

Breather Oil Trap

I have just modified my breather can so it can be cleaned out occasionally. https://listerengine.com/coppermine/albums/userpics/10026/Workshop_001_30-06-20.JPG https://listerengine.com/coppermine/albums/userpics/10026/Workshop_002_30-06-20.JPG It was in a right state inside when I cut it open, the n...

Re: Clutch Operating Lever Position

Hi Phil

I have all the correct parts installed and the lever is not bent, I am going to see what it looks like with the 1275 release bearing installed tomorrow evening.

Clutch Operating Lever Position

I wonder if anyone can tell me where I should expect the clutch operating lever to be positioned in the oval gearbox cutout. I am doing a trial assembly of the gearbox onto my spare engine and just as the thrust bearing starts to touch the pressure plate disc there is only about another 3/8" be...

Re: Gear box cover plate

Ah yes, I jumped to the conclusion it was the one on the actual gearbox. For the sheet steel gearbox floor cover I used this stuff. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Neoprene-Strip-3mm-Thick-x-5m-Long-Black-Self-adhesive-Neoprene-Rubber-Sponge/351276321881?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&var=622195347572...

Re: Gear box cover plate

I would use a paper gasket and maybe a smear of blue Hylomar.
RTV will be a pig to remove later, it has no place on engine/gearbox parts IMHO.

Re: engine problems novice help!

You can clearly see the heater drain warning plate is held in place by twisted wires. This has been questioned on another thread. You can get away without needing a fuel pump if you can rig up a temporary gravity feed supply to the carb. I agree, that wiring looks a bit iffy to me, be very careful w...

Re: Fitting an oil gauge.

What a good idea. I have just been out and removed the clumsy Tee piece from my spare engine that is nearly finished. I have done exactly the same as you and tapped a hole in the banjo bolt, it is a much neater solution. One thing I found was that those fittings are not NPT as has been stated a few ...

Re: horn problem !!!

Unless I have misunderstood its operation, it Llooks like that will need some sort of "top hat" shaped fibre washer to ensure the inside diameter of the ring terminal cannot touch the mounting stud and is only electrically connected to the spring wiper strip.

Re: Oil Gallery Screwed Plugs

With Pipe sizes they are measured by the nominal bore of the pipe, not the diameter of the thread.
A lot of folks make the same mistake I am afraid. I suppose its what you are used to dealing with, in my job I use these sort of fittings all the time so dont even think about it.

Re: Clutch Operating Lever

Thanks Phil I will have another play with it after work this evening, I am just not sure just how difficult it should be to move the operating lever manually. I did put the cover under my arbour press last night, and I could get it to operate that way, but there is 2 tons available so hardly surpris...

Re: Clutch Operating Lever

Hi Phil

It is a standard 1098 engine and rib case box, and yes definitely flywheel side as marked on plate was correct way round.

I have had it all in bits again and tried once more with the same result as well.
