Don't all 1098 Moggies keep up with modern traffic?

Re: Test Run Engine

Just wire it up as described since you don't need to connect the dynamo. If converting the car to negative earth, you'll need to 'flash' the dynamo to repolarise it. Alternatively, if you want to wire it up positive earth on the test, just swap round battery positive and negative in my description.

Re: Sensible upgrades ??

I throughly recommend the halogen upgrade. It's really quick to fit and improves night visibility a lot. Plus, if a bulb goes you can get one easily wherever you are, unlike a sealed beam. I'd see how you get on with the current tank before thinking about upgrading. I've had a flat a couple of times...

Re: Sensible upgrades ??

All sensible upgrades for a daily driver Morris, in my opinion.

Spin-on oil filter and halogen headlights are other good ones, if you don't have that already. Plus a cigarette lighter socket for the sat nav if, like me, you have a tendency to get lost!

Re: Test Run Engine

The coil is connected with one side to the distributor low tension lead and the other side to the battery positive, plus the HT lead to the distributor, of course.

Re: Slow petrol filling?

I always slow right down when the tank is nearing full to avoid major blowback.

A few years ago, I filled up on the way to work and got absolutely covered in petrol after it exploded out the filler pipe. The most annoying part was having to deal with people saying 'can you smell petrol???' all day!

Re: Test Run Engine

I test ran my engine on the floor before installing. I fitted the distributor, coil and starter motor. I connected a jump lead from the battery negative to the metal of the engine and another jump lead to the battery positive with the wire for the ignition clamped under the jump lead. To start, I ju...

Re: The smell

I'm also a big fan of 'old car smell' but I no longer smell it in my Moggie, unfortunately. I don't know if it's gone or I've just become insensitive to it by driving it every day. I did stick my head in an old mini at a car show recently (rectangular blue and green austin badge era) and that had a ...

Re: Upgrade advice please

Hi, I can enthusiastically recommend the Morris Minor Workshop (ESM). They're in Wadhurst so I think a bit further from you than Bristol but not dramatically. They're the only place I trust with my car now and they do thoroughly professional work to factory standards, no bodges. They have a genuine ...

Re: Hot day!

I've had the same, seeing the needle jump before I start the engine! Driving for the past few days has resulted in the back of my shirt becoming drenched with sweat, even on a short drive. I saw the temperature gauge creeping up over 90°C yesterday afternoon and the engine seemed to be threatening t...

Re: Best place for new traveller wood

I replaced all the wood on my Traveller recently with parts from Woodies and it's excellent quality. Be aware though that there can be a long lead time when ordering. I made the mistake of waiting until I'd disassembled the old frame before ordering the new one.

Re: Engine cutting out while driving

It sounds like you've solved the problem then! Your best bet is probably just to fit a new set of points and a new condenser to the pump.

People here usually recommend not to have in-line fuel filters as they are unnecessary and can be a source of problems, notably vapourisation.

Re: Engine cutting out while driving

It would also be useful to know if it cuts out instantly or sputters first. Also, are there any erratic noises from the fuel pump before it cuts out or, as Oliver asked, when you switch it back on?

Re: Knock when braking

Hi, Thanks for the suggestions. I've just checked the chassis leg and I can't see any cracks or other apparent damage around the eyebolt or anywhere else. I started trying some more involved diagnostics. My driveway is very slightly sloping so you can roll the car forwards and then brake to generate...

Re: Knock when braking

Hi, I fitted the new bolt today, reassembled everything and it still knocks. The knock is high pitched and seems to come from quite far back, around under the driver's seat. I can't be certain though, since I can't drive the car and listen around at the same time. Now, I was just driving home and ha...

Re: Knock when braking

Thanks,

I'll disassemble the front of the tie bar if tightening the yoke hasn't cured the problem. I don't want to change more than one thing at a time.

Just to add one more simple thing to look at, check that the choke isn't stuck on. The outer sheath of the cable can ride up and jam against the hole it goes in.

Hi,

Are you saying that the nut securing the yoke to the suspension arm should be a nyloc? It's just a normal nut and a lock washer on mine.

Re: Engine trouble

In terms of timing, check that the distributor is secure and that the vacuum advance is connected. Just thinking of things that may have been disturbed.
