Re: Which gearbox...
Also, just interest here - not worry! It's interesting that the first gear cog is ALSO the coupling sleeve for second - clever dual use. BUT why no synchro on first? I see now how the synchro works on the inside of the first gear, allowing it to synchronise the slide onto second - but it just 'rough...

Re: Which gearbox...
Right, can't take a clear picture - but the rebuilt box, though a little 'looser' seems to have new gears in it. Plus it has new seals, a new clutch bearing etc. So will just do a straight swap and see what happens!!! However, it does lead to another question... it always does doesn't it! I have stu...

Re: Which gearbox...
Right BMC - there are loads of gears underneath H! I'm presuming it is the one on the end of the lay shaft - hardly a gear at all, more like splines? I can't get a clear pic. However: Gearbox 1, rebuilt I have been reliably told, has all clean teeth with no wear on any of the gears behind H. BUT all...

Re: Which gearbox...
BMC - you don't need to know WHAT two things are in order to compare them and see they are 'the same'. However, I take your point - it's just that sometimes you can sound a little vitriolic. :( I am working extremely long hours at present and am constantly tired (exam season, trips abroad to plan et...

Re: Which gearbox...
So, anybody, can you tell me where, in relation to the letters I've stuck on the pic, first gear is - is it under H???? In fact telling me which each is would be handy...

Re: Which gearbox...
Hahaha back - the second was just a closer picture BMC - they both look EXACTLY the same thus no REASON to post pick of each - my question was whether to fit the waggling one or none waggling one? As for first gear I don't know which one it is - hence my next post where I asked this... ?!

Re: Which gearbox...
Oh, by the way, when you waddle the input shaft, the gears at the end in the box also move side to side by a mill or so more too.

Re: Which gearbox...
Yes, they are pictures of the same box, both look exactly the same in relation to tooth damage - ie basically none I can see. I'm presuming that 1st gear and dog teeth are under the golden arm marked with an H? And the lay gear is below that gear un the lower shaft? Is that correct? If so they are a...

Which gearbox...
So, with the speedo worm on the shaft in the gearbox 'spinning', I thought I'd swap gearboxes, I have two spares to choose from - both of which are supposed to be 'good'. Which one to choose lol. Both of them 'seem' exactly the same - here is a piccy of the interior:[frame] http://mmoc.org.uk/mbimag...

Re: Speedo issue - UPDATED - Help!
Bums.
Right. Is it possible for a relative novice to do this? I mean I can strip rear axles, brakes, etc now on the car - but a gearbox?!

Re: Speedo issue - UPDATED - Help!
Okay, replaced the plastic housing and the actual metal shaft with the square hole in etc. Perfect, measuring with my sat nav brought joy as it was spot on for a few miles... then... back to wobbly and no proper reading. So, home again, plastic housing back out and felt the ACTUAL work gear only to ...

Re: Speedo issue
haha... so, you undo the plastic 'nut' and then does the drive just pull out? Or is it held in at the other end?
