Re: Not Starting

To be honest, I would not be rooting around for 'an antiquated electronic ignition system' just yet, if at all, until you have diagnosed the current problem. There appears to be circumstantial evidence that the coil is at fault, but this can only be determined by systematic testing (or simple substi...

Re: Not Starting

Five minutes may have been long enough to 'cook' the coil. Remove the dizzy cap and then test for a spark at the king lead with ignition on and, with the points in closed position, flick them open with a little screwdriver a few times. As you have not tinkered with any part of the ignition system an...

Assuming you have hot water flowing through the heater, and hot air blowing out from it, the switch is bound to get at least warm.....

I thought a 'snowflake' was just a mollycoddled 'wuss', but for a more detailed definition - and history - looky here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snowflake_(slang)

Re: 1955 split screen Morris Minor

OK then, being a 948cc engine, you may need a paper air filter - or maybe not, depending on the type of filter used! Some 948 models used an oil bath filter - and others used the dry paper element (inside a housing that looks a bit like a saucepan!). You will need the paper oil filter for a 948, ass...

Re: 1955 split screen Morris Minor

Well, it depends on whether you still have the original 803cc engine, or a later, bigger one as regards oil filter, air filter. And whether you have the points set-up or electronic ignition. But generally speaking, and assuming you have the points set-up, get points and condensor and rotor from The ...

Re: Original equipment

The use of the spare wheel clamp is interesting and ingenious but, originally, it was the curved end of the wheelbrace in Mike's picture above that was designed to remove the hub cap by wiggling it side to side under the cap (i.e. not just prying it off in one movement). I put a bit of cardboard bet...

Re: Is moggy insulting?

'Moggie', 'Moggie Minor' and 'Mog' have been used for years. I don't think they are insulting terms at all. Wait til someone calls your car 'an old wreck/tin can/heap of junk/banger' etc. - then you know they are being insulting!

Re: starting

Have you checked the plugs after a run? If sooty, then probably mixture too rich as 'kennatt' suggests.
Are the plugs new(-ish) and in good condition - and are they gapped properly (0.025 inch)? I assume the plugs are the correct type? Champion N9YC or equivalent is recommended.

Re: Coil? Or something else...

In addition to the above, have a good look at the condition of the king lead where it goes into the coil, and whether it goes in tightly - might be a dodgy conection, made OK when you first push it in, but then loosening as you try to fire the engine.

Re: An Essential Spare?

Yes, there is a certain amount of sense in what you say, Ian. And as I have pointed out before, with age and use, any and every part will fail sooner or later, even if the car is well maintained. Its just a matter of time. Ominously, some have reported early failure of new replacement parts! Certain...

Re: An Essential Spare?

I may be reckless, but a failure every 25 years wouldn’t convince me to class this as an essential spare! There are so many things I could carry in the car if I worried too much. Fair point, but as the pedal rod broke, I'm wondering if the adjustment rod may be next as they are presumably the same ...

Re: Steering Rack

"do you need to remove the normal type grease nipple to use one of these guns ?" No, the gun fits straight over the nipple. Pity it is out of stock but there must be others on the market - you'd think so, anyway. I think you could use a grease gun to pump the oil but clean all the grease o...

Re: Steering Rack

I use one of these to oil the rack via the steering nipple: https://www.frost.co.uk/hp-push-type-oil-gun/
It does the job but leaks a bit while in storage so I keep it in a polythene bag.

Re: An Essential Spare?

Yes, back in the 1970s driving a 1955 Minor. A long way from home, but the route had few junctions. Started the car in first gear (a bit brutal) and went through the gears to top ( it's surprisingly easy to get engine speed just right for clutchless gear changing if you concentrate). Goodness, that...

An Essential Spare?

I had a nasty shock a few days ago when I went to change gear and the pedal went stright to the floor with a crack! The pedal to clutch shaft had snapped in two. Miles from anywhere. And I had to climb a hill to get a phone signal...... The RAC suggested a three hour wait, so I attempted to pass the...
