Quite possibly. It certainly hasn't been done while the car has been in the family, since 1986. The car runs sweetly enough, you can't complain about a 40 yr engine that can still deliver 45mpg on a run! I'll give the other one a go, if it's worse then it's easy enough to swap back. Looking at the d...

Useful to have a working spare though. One difference between the two is the cam lobes on the 41124 are much sharper than on the one off the car. I presume this will have an effect on the dwell angle?

Hmmmmm. Thanks Mike. Neither 41124B or 41257B are listed, however 41124A & 41257A are. 41124A is for Austin, Morris, Minor & Traveller, 41257A is for 1275 Mini etc. So at some point someone has replaced the standard unit in my Minor for one off a 1275 Mini. Think I might try the 41124 to see...

25D distributor types

OK folks another brain teaser for you. The distributor on my engine (a 1098, prefix 10MA-U-H, from 1969) is stamped 41257 B 2872. The weights inside are stamped 10, I think this refers to 10 deg mech advance. I know the 2872 means week 28 of 1972, indicating that it's not the original distributor. L...

Oil pressure relief valve

Evening all,

what would be the effect of the oil pressure relief valve being faulty? Ie stuck, or the spring being too short?

(Not that I've got a problem, just curious, been reading the manual!!)

cheers,
N

Had a Disaster today. Got the drivers side door off, after a battle with an uncooperative bolt, which had to be drilled out. After a couple of hours beating seven bells out of the hinge pin in an attempt to shift it, I gave up on replacing it and got new hinges instead. It would not budge. So, £50 l...

I went to the Council MOT station. It was about £52 back in Feb.

I trust them because they are not allowed to do repairs (so I'm told), hence no incentive to fail.

They failed it, but that's another story.

Door hinges & hinge pins

OK, this may be a stoopid question, but here goes anyway........ Which way do the front door hinge pins go in-with the splined end at the top or at the bottom? And if I'm going to tap them out with a drift, do I do it from the bottom or the top? I need to know because I need to get the front drivers...

All the online suppliers sell them. You just knock them out with a punch from the bottom upwards then knock new ones in top downwards (support the bottom of the door on a jack or blocks of wood whilst you do this). They say the hinges should be reamed out for the new (oversize) pins but in reality,...

The rubber gets very hard and can split without warning.
That's why I got rid of them, they weren't worn, just old and tired looking.

Re: how long have your minor's tyres lasted before changing

How long have your tyres lasted(in miles and time) before you have had to replace them. Just taken off two Firestone's or Bridgestone, can't remember which, tyre mechanic dated them to around 1993. They must have done about 20,000miles. What brands lasted the longest and do you use tubes or not. I ...

I'd vote for Drive it Day. Can't think of a better day!

However, 25th April is also the date of the 2010 London Marathon, so driving in & around London might be a bit busy, especially central London.

I've always wanted to visit the Ace Cafe too. How about a poll on dates & starting venue?

Am I right in thinking that the trunnions and kingpins on the Marinas were made of a different, harder grade of metal than on the Minors? Therefore it was less of a problem on the Marinas?

It's happened to me twice, back in the early days of having the car, before I got wise to the problem. The first time we just replaced the bottom trunnion, the second we replaced both front kingpins & top & bottom trunnions, plus the steering rod arms & track rod ends for good measure. E...

Can anyone......

........post a photo of the handbrake without the seats & carpet in place please? I'm interested in exactly how/where it's mounted to the transmission tunnel. Mine was bodged a few years ago during welding repairs, and the handbrake is at a slight angle off centre towards the passenger side, suc...

I've heard both sides of the argument and I don't know if there is a definitve right answer to this. All I can say is that in over 23 yrs of running tubeless radials (145's & 155's) on the original rims, I've never had a problem with a tyre deflating or blowing out. And I don't give it any mercy...

Too early to commit, but yes in principle we'd be up for it. As an aside, a fellow runner at my running club has just done the London-Brighton run. And I mean RUN. 56 miles in 11 hrs something or other. Awesome. But then this is the guy who does the Comrades Marathon in SA. That's 56 miles in Africa...
