Re: Bouncy Rear-End

Harshness of the suspension depends on the oil viscosity in the dampers and their condition, amongst others. The trouble with SAE viscosity is that it is measured at elevated temperatures ( ie hot oil). 10W in the designator means it acts like SAE10 at cool temps. This means the viscosity rating at ...

Re: Number order of pistons

Nothing to do with the rad, per se. Convention is drive to the engine 'brain' - the camshaft. No1 was always at that end of the engine, as were any rod cap markings, whether it were mains caps numbering, or rod markings which would denote the camshaft side of the engine as well as the hole/bearing n...

Re: rust on front of chassis leg

We used to use 'plastic padding' to successfully patch small leaky areas on
radiator tubes. OK for over-cooled engines but needs more careful consideration if cooling is marginal. Possibly better choices of material these days.

And again it all goes quiet from the OP  Poster is recorded as 'active' on the 23rd. Maybe just keeping his head down because his meaning of snapped bolts in a head is more usually the holding down fixings - and not bolts but studs, anyway. Possibly posting for someone to come to his aid? I would d...

On the subject of Castrol R. Never mix vegetable and mineral oils - you may end up with a thick viscous gunge! Many poor unsuspecting motorcyclists have had seized engines from trying that trick.

Re: Cylinder Head Nuts

Head studs to manifold to block taps.... threads diverge... Re taps on blocks - just not needed these days. Taps hark back to the days when cooling systems were drained regularly in the winter (and sometimes the constant refilling with hard water scaled up the system). One advantage was that of fill...

Re: Gearbox Tail Shaft Bush Fitting

If attempting to ream with an adjustable reamer, you must take tiny cuts - or the bore may be damaged. It is reamed to final size in situ because it may change slightly if machined and then fitted.

Re: Firing on three cylinders

Seems to me that the the distributor was fitted one tooth out...... and the end of the rotor was just close enough for the spark to jump to the HT collector in the cap or to jump to the wrong one. Unusual for just one cylinder. Was it just one, btw? I would have suspected the dwell angle to be wrong...

Re: Suffix registrations

Suffix letters were introduced in '63, but were not mandatory until '65. Whether it was at the start of the C suffix or from the end of that year, I am not totally sure - but all '66 registrations were 'D'. Then they altered the change-over date to August(?) in '67. RAB edited to swap round '66 and ...

Re: Advice on buying a Convertible please.

These old cars need regular maintenance, like greasing steering/suspension joints - and the dip stick probably needs oiling more often than a modern car. So , unless it needs to be into a garage for servicing very regularly for a good reason, it is better to do some of the basic maintenance oneself....

Re: grit bead blaster - any good ?????

Grit blasting works a treat. BUT!!! Cabinet type are good, if big enough or for small items. Otherwise you need to consider a dedicated room or make a lot of mess outside. You need a biggish compressor. I used a 10cfm compressor at 10bar and I could empty the approx 150l tank. Grit gets everywhere. ...

I reckon most things on a moggie are straightforward and straight backward. You remove bits in any sensible order and make notes of each removal. Eventually you can turn yor list upside down and (if you can read your upside down writing) replacement is just a matter of going down that upside down li...

I think what you are looking for is on page 5 of the ESM site in the 'pick up' section. They will need to fit halfway between the eyes on the tilt canvas. The simple hooks are not quite as I remember them, but my memory is not so good over small detail from over 40 years or so!

I don't know, but ESM will, I am sure. They have a part number RAD102 (and a drain tap on the following page) for the radiator. I don't expect the block threads will be any different, but they should know.

Re: Cylinder Head Nuts

As i see it, removing the rocker shaft simply allows the push rods to be removed and placed neatly in order before removing the head. Still choice of order of operations. An alternative would be to slacken off the adjusters but I doubt many mechanics do that. It needs to be loosened, at least, on he...

Re: Noisy SU fuel pump.

Suspect air entering at the joints before the pump. This will not be such a noticeable problem with a pump 'well man of the job', but any air leaking into the pipe will clear without affecting the level to the carb. If the replacement was only just sufficient, any air leakage may well keep it runnin...

Not sure about 'connecting to the gearbox - it might physically, but must be driven from the engine. How do you get any drive when sitting in gear and stationary and with the engine running? Mechanical drives are often taken by a reduction gear driven from the camshaft, but I know not how this one w...

Hi Richard, I think I need the off side but cannot be quite sure. My Moggie has been away for rebuild for several years. Hoping to get it back this or next week, as it has now been painted and only needs some bits putting back on it. I can then start on the running gear and rebuilding/refitting the ...
