Re: Adding an extra silencer
Kennet You are right that the design of the exhaust manifold and exhaust system has an impact on the way the exhaust gasses exit the engine. There is a good description of gas flow and exhaust system design requirements in Vizard's book 'Tuning The A Series'. You can have good flow and low noise wit...

Re: Rear suspension dimensions
Some leaf spring fitments are not parallel and the distance apart at the front is less than that at the rear.
I will try and measure my rear spring front hanger mounts which are original and have not been welded or plated.

Re: Did they skimp on skimming?
Robert Thank you for the additional information. Whilst the top of the block is not perfect I have seen worse. I would advise that you check the top of the block for flatness. 0.003" max is the limit for any hollows/unevenness regards the top of the block. Check with straight edge and a feeler ...

The 107.59mm over the ends of the front anchorage bolts is taken from BMC Alignment Chart illustration R17. The chart was drawn when only BMC parts were available so there was no requirement to query the measurement. Those parts were standard and usually made on a mechanised capstan lathe. The only ...

Re: Did they skimp on skimming?
The marks on the top of the block are confusing as some of the marks indicate that a fly cutter has had a machining pass over the top of the block and the other irregular marks indicate that coarse emery paper has been used. Looking at the top of another machined 'A' Series block the top surface on ...

Re: oil filter type
The two filter heads are distinctly different. The top of the Purolator filter head is reasonably flat. The top of the Tecalamite filter head has a large 'pimple' on its top face which contains the female thread for the filter securing bolt. Another good indicator as to the type of filter head you h...

To me comparing an 'A' Series with a diesel engine is like comparing chalk and cheese as they are two totally different animals notwithstanding different engines. Thank you for your input as regards tractor and car diesel engines lubricants and their servicing arrangements but if asked and having ch...

Re: Oil filter conversion
Oliver90owner The only problem with removing the oil via the dip stick is that you do not remove the crud that has settled in the sump. Oil should be drained from the sump when hot with a free flow from the drain plug which helps to pull out and remove the crud. To alleviate the problem of the near ...

Re: Torsion adjustment
You will have to disconnect the top trunnion on the side for which you want to adjust the suspension height - this is to take any and all of the loading off the torsion bar before you can remove the bolt from the adjustment plate. When you do disconnect the top trunnion tie the swivel back to the bo...

Many Minors I have not come across any problems as regards access to a spin on oil filter conversion fitted to a Minor 1000. What problems are you encountering? A spin on filter can be changed without getting under the car. A strap may be of use but it is not imperative as a screw driver through the...

Re: Oil filter conversion
You do not have to throw away the metal spin off filter. After draining the filter usually by punching a hole in the bottom and leaving overnight it goes in the metal recycling skip. Any paper inside the filter will be consumed in the metal recycling process. To me that is more environmentally frien...

Richard Bolts with metric threads with Whitworth heads - not an urban myth but a reality. Some engine studs also had metric threads with metric threaded nuts which used Whitworth sized spanners. A left over of Morris taking over the Hotchkiss engine works Coventry in 1919 with their metric calibrate...

Re: Oil filter conversion
The classic Mini oil filter where it attaches to the block is the same as the Minor 1000. Early classic Minis has a similar oil filter housing to the Minor 1000. Because of the similarity of the mounting the spin on filter head and element filter head are interchangeable. To enlarge on Pauls post ab...

Re: Oil filter conversion
One of the best conversions you can do to a 'A' Series engine and is easy to fit. The only thing to take special care of is that there is no strain in the metal feed pipe from the block to filter head. Just bend adjust to suit. Some fit a flexible pipe to remove any miss alignment but not really req...

The white mixture may be have been in the radiator from new and your shaking it about has created the milk like substance. If you have no loss of water and/or oil and there is no sign of the two mixing for example oil getting into the coolant or the coolant getting into the engine oil I would not wo...

Re: What thread is this?
A 5/16" UNF thread does have 24 TPI. To confirm - screw a 5/16" UNF nut onto the threads - if it is right - rotating the nut should require no more than finger pressure. A set of thread gauges is an absolute must when determining which thread is which. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/52-Blade-S...
