Re: Identifying 1275 engine
One big advantage of the electric pump is that it primes the carburettor ahead of starting the engine. With a mechanical pump the engine has to be turned over a number times on the starter to fill the float chamber. Probably not a problem with a car that is regularly used, but after a week or so, th...

Re: Removing the camshaft nut
If the engine is out, I use a G-clamp though the starter motor hole on to the flywheel (clutch also removed). Never had any problems undoing either the camshaft nut or crankshaft pulley bolt using this method. Use the same method for torquing up during the rebuild. If you have a impact gun, there is...

Re: SPEEDOMETER LED's
Leave the 'Ignition Warning Light' as a conventional bulb if you have an alternator fitted, otherwise LED bulbs work very well and the backlight ones give a nice clear light.

Re: Starter speed
Yes, they can have either 9 or 10 teeth, and both mesh with the flywheel, which seems odd.
I had an exchange 10T starter some years ago, and it turned the engine over noticeably quicker than the previous 9T. I think to get the full benefit, you do need a good size battery as well.

£500! Absolute bargain, provided you have the space for it. Very jealous!

I would have loved a jig like that when I was doing the restoration in the mid 90's. What a gem!

Re: Reconditioned Box - Jumping out of gear
The 1098 gear lever is different to the 948; the length below the gear lever ball is longer on the 1098. If you fit a 948 gear lever in a 1098 box, the shift is very vague.

From the same 'Thread Sizes' source the torque setting is 40 lbf. ft.
I use HT socket head cap screws, with Loctite on the threads and tightened to the recommended torque setting.

If you use pop rivets to secure the label, make sure you put some silicone sealant on the inside of the of the rocker cover top prevent oil weeping up through to pop rivet. How do I know that???

Re: 1275 timing marks
Most A-Series crankshaft pulleys are around 120mm, which proves to be a very convenient diameter for easy timing mark positions. Once you have the TDC mark accurately made, the rest are very simple to do. For a 7° mark, set a pair of calipers to 7mm, and use them to mark the pulley 7mm from the TDC ...

Re: engine
Why make it so complicated? It's standard 1275 Midget engine, why not just use a standard Midget 1275 flywheel and the standard Midget 1275 6.5" diaphragm clutch. It works very well in standard form!! That's what we have with our 1380, apart from an uprated driven/centre plate. It's heavy enoug...

The drawing shown is for the Midget/Sprite caliper bracket. I also have one for the Metro bracket, but Marina brackets are quite different and are available from whichever supplier offers the Marina conversion.

Re: Thermostat housing
The housing from a 'B' Series engine fits if you drill out the holes to 3/8" diameter, and points in the right direction to fit the standard Minor top hose - the outlet from the 'B' housing is slightly larger than the Minor, but a little working will get it on without too much trouble.

Re: Help With Engine Rebuild/Larger Head
2 points on your proposed engine spec: Rockers - will the standard rockers line up with the valves correctly in a 12G940 head? If not the use the 1275 rockers. Exhaust manifold - both 1.75" and 2" are too big for a 1098 engine. The Maniflow manifold is listed as 1.625" OD, which will ...

I am now totally confused! How many needles are we talking about and how many 'Martin's'? There seem to be two people posting called Martin, and then two carburettors and two needles. You started off with a BEJ, which is an HIF44 needle, and then ADS, which is for an HIF38. They are not interchangea...

The picture below shows the connections for an HIF carburettor - HIF 38 and 44. The connections can be on either side of the carburettor, but the function is always the same: 7. Fuel inlet from pump 8. Vent to atmosphere - usually a length of hose is connected to this port 9. Vacuum for ignition - u...

Re: LED bulbs anyone?
LED bulbs do not work well as the 'ignition warning light' with an alternator. They do not draw enough current to excite the alternator quickly and when it does, it can glow a bit. Better to keep the original tungsten bulb. The oil pressure light should work perfectly well - I have never noticed any...
